Whilst Brian faces disciplinary action for a death in custody from his past the rest of the team discover the gun that killed drug-trafficker Christian Highsmith in 1998. The same gun killed a young boy, Danny Bossano, in 1982 in Gibraltar, a port of call for the ships on which Christian allegedly hid the drugs. The UCOS team go to Gibraltar to meet Superintendent Cruz, the local cold case chief, who believes Danny was part of the dope-smuggling gang. The fact that the gun was army issue also leads to the evasive commander Adam Sinclair whilst Sandra quizzes casino owner Harry Truman, who had been a friend of Christian. Gerry and Steve visit Truman's casino but accidentally get locked in a shipping container whilst shipping agent Gordon Fletcher, an associate of Truman, is found dead. Written by don @ minifie-1

Did You Know?

The monkeys on Gibraltar are, in fact, scavengers that will enter hotel rooms and even attack lone or unwary pedestrians. In general, they do not attack humans in the more populated areas, but they will do so on the Rock itself. Visitors to the Top of the Rock are warned at the ticket offices not to bring plastic bags up with them as the monkeys associate plastic bags with food and will attack humans for food. (The monkeys believe they are in a higher social level than humans, and in their society, the lower levels owe food to the upper levels. The monkeys are utterly unafraid of humans.) See more »

The first shot of the team at the Gibraltar Airport shows them walking across the lobby. They are walking in the direction of the gates, though, not from the gates to the door. See more »

Jumped the shark?
7 June 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

My wife and I have been great fans of this program in the past. I've seen 4 episodes in the 2013 season and they're nowhere near the quality of New Tricks' best years. The 4 episodes play on Brian being phased out of the series and try to wring as much emotion as possible from this and other situations. Sandra verbally abuses Brian unmercifully in one of these episodes, which, since we're sympathetic to Brian and his problems seems like overkill. Many scenes are played like a soap opera. There's way too much yelling and emotional exaggeration. Somehow the gentle humor of the original team is replaced with a lot of awkward moments and drawn-out tearful reflections. When we watch mysteries we're mainly interested in solving the mysteries and the personal lives of the team should add to the story, not detract from it. I'd say that the writing just isn't up to par, though I also appreciate the difficulties of creating a show with the chemistry of the original cast disrupted by changing personnel. I'd just say the show is past its prime.
