- In an unspecified city in Australia (at least that's where it was filmed), Steven walks into a store at night to make a purchase. The man who runs the store knows Steven and starts a conversation with him which gets long. Steven is about to have a baby and doesn't know if he can handle being a father. A man is waiting to buy cigarettes and finally interrupts. Steven gets annoyed at being interrupted, but the man makes his purchase and leaves angrily. Steven later sees the man and beats him to death.
Three years later, Steven gets a call from Percival. Steven is a hit man and Percival wants to hire him. They meet on a train and Percival has many scars from previous suicide attempts including jumping off a tall building and jumping off a bridge Percival says was in London. Percival wants Steven to kill him, but only when he doesn't want to die and is not expecting to. Right now Percival wants to die. Percival also talks about fate and how no matter what, he and Steven would have met at that time. Steven agrees to the strange conditions because Percival gave him a lot of money. They are essentially alone on the train so Steven goes ahead and shoots Percival three times.
Steven puts on his wife Annie's dress and listens to opera. Meanwhile, Percival wakes up in the hospital and a male doctor tells him he is lucky to be alive. Not all the bullets could be removed, though, but a tumor near his spinal cord was discovered, which if it had not been found, would have paralyzed him.
Steven meets with his boss Thomas who is mad that Steven did not kill Frank DuBois. Steven explains that there were problems. Steven insists the driver cross the street and he will not. Percival lands on the cab after jumping. Steven gets out of the cab and tries to cross the street but has an epileptic seizure.
Steven and Percival meet again in a noisy restaurant. While listening to opera and wearing Annie's dress, Steven is about to shoot himself when a bullet goes through his window. He goes outside and a mean-looking man is about to shoot a cop, who pleads for his life as he has a daughter. Steven shoots the man. The brother invites Steven to a gallery where Percival's work is being shown. When Steven sees the painting he knew Percival was working on, which the brother says is Christopher, he recognizes it. In a flashback, Steven is killing the man from the store.
Steven walks out dazed and steps into the street without realizing it. He sees all the people he killed, including Christopher. Annie smiles at him and motions for him to come to her. A truck brakes quickly, then Steven is in a hospital bed wearing a neck brace. The same male doctor says he is lucky to be alive.
