Well-acted romantic porn
30 January 2015 | by (New York, New York) – See all my reviews

I caught SEX WITH A VAMPIRE via Showtime After Dark and was impressed by the performances and the atmosphere generated by actress/director Stormy Daniels.

The cable version is strictly softcore, and shows the value of shooting porn like a feature film, with that theatrical look plus script & coverage which allows for dual editions. This was good enough not to miss the explicit sex.

Unlike most recent vampire tales Stormy emphasizes romance over blood & gore, with the most indelible image a recurring scene of heroine Gracy Glam sitting at her piano. She finds love with a stranger, underplayed nicely by Xander Corvus, who is a bit overexposed on cable of late, as many of his movies have been released in soft versions (e.g., EROTIC INK and BREAST FRIENDS).

The mood is dark, with Corvus on the run from some evil vampires. Daniels herself appears in a brief, non-sex role as a friendly neighbor of Glam's.

Visually the movie is attractive in a neo noir sense, and manages to work despite a strictly contemporary setting. I've seen other Daniels-helmed pictures and she's to be applauded for making story films (and bootstrapping her way to a post-sex performer career) rather than opting for the wall-to-wall sex drivel that currently dominates the marketplace.
