'Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer': The '40-second prayer' heard around the world

10 June 2013 1:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Just the name of the feminist collective Pussy Riot triggers reaction, which is its purpose.

HBO's documentary "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer," airing Monday (June 10), tries to explain how a 40-second protest inside a church resulted in three of them being thrown in prison (with two still there), and sparked worldwide debate.

"It is the story of a foiled feminist revolution and that is one of the things that has been lost," Maxim Pozdorovkin, one of the filmmakers, tells Zap2it.

"The story has been misrepresented in the West and in Russia," he says. "In Russia it is presented as vulgar hooligans, motivated by religious hatred. And in the West, it is seen as an innocent punk band, just for singing an anti-Putin song. And the reality is so much more epic and generally thought-provoking, and forces us to ask of any society: What is and isn't allowed? What is your right as artists? »

Jarvis Cocker gears up to be Sheffield Doc/Fest's Man of Steel

10 June 2013 4:49 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

As Superman prepares for global lift-off, Cocker fine-tunes the premiere of the opening night film at the Sheffield Doc/Fest

This year's Sheffield documentary festival kicks off on Wednesday with a double celebration for the city: it's hosted the fest for two decades, and it's put in 100 making stainless steel.

The opening night event, The Big Melt, smelts the two together: a documentary by Martin Wallace, it splices archive footage of the city and its steelworkers to a live soundtrack by Jarvis Cocker and other Sheffield musical alumni, including the City of Sheffield Brass Band, Richard Hawley and members of his band, some of Cocker's Pulp colleagues, the Forgemasters, a string quartet and a youth choir.

Said Cocker: "I only hope that we can pay proper homage to the extraordinary individuals featured in this footage. Our aim is to melt faces (and hearts) and to blow minds. With maybe a »

Watch: HBO Documentary 'Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer' Gets a New 40-Second Trailer

29 May 2013 7:46 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Following the successful airing of festival favorite "Behind the Candelabra" this past Sunday, HBO Films is trying to build buzz around another festival acquisition with a new trailer for the Sundance documentary "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer." The film focusing on the three-member band's trial won a Special Jury prize in Park City this January and recently earned an opening night slot at the Sheffield Doc/Fest.  The trailer is meaningfully brief. Clocking in at 40 seconds, the new spot matches the time of Pussy Riot's contentious 40-second performance they dubbed as a "punk prayer." It doesn't give away too much, but we do get a few brief glimpses of the band (both masked and unmasked), the trial, and the ensuing riots.  "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer" is scheduled to air on June 10 on HBO. Take a look at the new spot below.
