Plot Summary

  • Harry continues his affair with Ellen in her new home but Rose visits Lady Mae, who alerts her to her husband's infidelity, causing Rose to agree to pose for a painting by Roddy. Harry shocks his staff by suggesting that all beauty products should be put on display, rather than behind the counter, with perfumes at the fore to mask street smells. Display organizer Henri brings in his old flame, Valerie Maurel, an advertising agent for consultation and, although she hints at caution, Harry gets his way. However Henri also sees that Agnes has a talent and uses her designs and not Ellen's photographs in the display window. Agnes is experiencing domestic troubles though, due to Reg's drinking. Lady Mae forces Harry to cancel Tony's gambling debts as well as getting him to support the Suffragette movement by allowing them to meet weekly at the store.

  • Rumors begin to spread about Harry's affair with Ellen Love and Lady Mae, who has agreed to help the Selfridges eldest daughter be presented, makes a point of telling Rose. At the store, Selfridge wants to move ladies perfume out of the pharmacy and into it's own department - beauty counters. His senior employees are are shocked however at the suggestion that they may also display makeup and other cosmetic products. Valerie Maurel from the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in the United States arrives to help them with the issue. She and Henri Leclaire are lovers. Harry also decides they need to develop their own house brand of perfume and wants Ellen to endorse it. She's developed a bit of a drug habit. Henri isn't so keen on Ellen and asks Agnes to help him with another approach. Agnes' father meanwhile is causing her and her brother more than just a little trouble. He gives her a black eye which causes her to miss work but doesn't stop Victor from coming around. After her boyfriend Tony loses a good deal of money to Selfridge at the poker tables, Lady Mae makes a point of getting Harry to forgive the debt.
