Agent McGee, when talking about why Corporal Leroy Jethro Moore received his Medal of Honor from President Clinton - 40 years after the war, says that "No African-American was awarded the Medal of Honor until Congress passed legislation in 1996 to correct the injustice." There were African-American recipients prior to 1996, including SP5 Lawrence Joel, who was both the first medic to earn the honor during the Vietnam Conflict and the first living African-American recipient since the Spanish-American War (1898). Then SP6 received his Medal of Honor from President Johnson in 1967 during a ceremony on the White House Lawn. William Carney was the first African-American recipient. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 18, 1863 at Fort Wagner, SC. This action is depicted in the movie "Glory". See more
