Based on the 1997 Loomis Fargo Bank Robbery in Charlotte, North Carolina. $17.3 million in cash was stolen.
The release date to the film had been postponed from August 2015 to October 2015 after Relativity Media was having financial issues. Shortly after the move, the film was canceled indefinitely when Relativity Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Jim Carrey was attached to play the lead role, but he dropped out and Owen Willson replaced him.
Was originally titled Loomis Fargo. It changed to Armored Car before settling on Masterminds.
The real David Ghantt makes a cameo at the end of the film as a hostage.
Kate McKinnon's character was originally simply named Karen. Kate suggested to the director that she be named Jaundice, which he changed to Jandice to make it sound more like a real name.
The real life David Ghantt (played by Zach Galifianakis) had a cameo on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (Season 14, Episode 134)
This movie features 3 out of the 4 main leads from the 2016 movie Ghostbusters which are Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones.
Parts where characters are supposedly in Mexico were actually filmed in Puerto Rico.

The first film Jared Hess has directed, that he did not also write.
Writing credits in early promotional material read "Written by Emily Spivey and Jody Hill & Danny McBride and Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer". Spivey and Bowman & Palmer ended up sharing story and screenplay credit (with Spivey in first position for story, Bowman & Palmer for screenplay) following an arbitration conducted by the Writers Guild of America.

Part of Owen Wilson's team featured a character that seemed to be a play on one of the assailants fronm the Nancy Kerrigan attack.
