Banks defies orders by informally speaking to Martin Fleming on his own though he gets no results. Tom Rothwell returns from America for his father's funeral and tells the police he fell out with his father after seeing him with another woman. Pamela identifies her attacker as a rough-looking Irishman named by police records as Arthur Jameson,an arms fan and former client of Norcliffe but Jameson kills himself before he can be questioned. Following Tom's information Banks discovers that the woman in question was not Pamela. The trail leads to a house where all is revealed - including a money laundering scheme which justifies Banks' suspicions. With Pamela Jeffries unconscious in hospital following the attack on her, DI Morton and DS Jackman attends Keith Rothwell's funeral. They return to the Rothwell home to find they have been burgled. Banks feels there has to be something about Rothwell that has led to all of this and the police question anyone who may have known him. Banks speaks to the local MP, Martin Fleming, and is called on the carpet for doing so. When Pamela regains consciousness, she gives a description of her attacker but Helen is already one step ahead having identified Arthur Jameson as one of Norcliffe's clients. Meanwhile, Rothwell's son Tom returns for the funeral and tells the police he had seen his father with another woman.
