After trying to capture static electricity balls in the Warehouse, Pete and Myka are zapped into a black and white film noir set in Chicago thanks to a page from a crime novel being whammied called "Kiss Me, Forever." Unfortunately, the novel was never finished due to writer's block and the author went insane and then died.
They're in a P.I.'s office and a woman comes in asking for help with her husband who has disappeared. She shows them a picture and in it is the artifact-- a jade elephant-- they were using when they were zapped in it. She says her husband thought the elephant had magical powers. They realize what they need to do is finish the unfinished story, but they don't have any of their tools, so they improvise.
As they start their investigation their held hostage in a Casablanca-style bar and it's courtly owner Barnabas. Myka gets the upper hand of the man and his goons and grab his guns. The owner of the bar hired the woman's husband to get the jade elephant but then the guy decided to keep it. He gives them money to help him get the guy-- and the elephant-- back. They head to the guy, Carson's, office. It's been tossed.
They head to a hotel to find their man and notice a static ball in the light. Carson is dead and another man is running down the alley. Myka realizes it's a murder mystery and Pete notes they have to figure out whodunit or they're stuck forever.
They go to break the news to Carson's wife and find out the hot blonde who hired them lied and was having an affair with Carson and working at the club. They theorize she killed him herself and got the artifact for the sleazy club owner. They chase after her after her song at the club. Her name is actually Lily and she hired them to keep Carson safe. Myka doesn't believe her.
They run into the bartender who had been looking at them askance all night in an alley. It turns out he's the author and he knows that they're not supposed to be there and is willing to kill them to make sure they no longer are.
He explains in his real life his wife, the love of his life, died suddenly. He tried to write but couldn't because he was too beset by grief. It was the grief that created the artifact. They inform him if they solve the mystery they can escape. But he doesn't want to escape: his created Lily Abbott after his wife and he wants to stay in this world with her so he can save her. He tells them they're in the book for good. He goes to Lily and says they need to skip town and head to Bora Bora.
Myka and Pete figure out that it's Rebecca Carson, the jilted wife, who is using the artifact to kill people. She zaps Pete with it but misses Myka before she runs off. Myka revives Pete and they head back to the club. They have a showdown with Rebecca, Lily, and the author Tony. Pete fights with Rebecca and Myka fills her full of lead saving them all.(She's based on Tony's mother-in-law so he likes that.) They convince Tony it's time to return to the real world since the story is over and he says his goodbyes to Lily. But then he decides one more moment with Lily is better than a lifetime alone so Pete and Myka leave him in the book and return to the Warehouse. When they return, the formerly blank pages now have writing on them, they finished the story. They read it and learn that Tony and Lily made it to Bora Bora.
Back at the Warehouse Claudia and Jinks convince Artie that they've been pinged on classic cars disappearing. They go for a road trip.
They arrive at a car dealership full of the disappeared cars. They confront the owner, Artie pulls out a Tesla and freaks the guy out and he tells them the cars appear like magic and he hasn't met the guy selling them. They set up a trap with Artie's new/classic car for the mysterious seller.
Claudia ends up getting stuck in the trunk. Artie jumps in front of the car and it drives through him as if by magic. Jinks asks why he would do that. Artie declares no one else is dying on his watch. They follow a tracker Claudia has with her in the trunk.
The car thief reaches their destination and confronts Claudia. It's the saleswoman from the car dealership. They fight, Jinks and Artie arrive to save her and the woman drives off. She had magical gloves but left one behind. Artie grabs it, drives off after her. It turns out the gloves belonged to a movie stunt driver that makes cars untouchable the first time they are driven. Artie and the saleswoman engage in a serious car chase with Artie besting her.
Jinks goes to the Regents--they asked him to keep an eye on Artie-- to tell them he feels like Artie is being unnecessarily reckless. The Regents say it's time to act. Jinks worry they're going to bronze him or turn him into an H.G. Wells-like hologram. The Regent tells him not to worry, they'll take care of it.
