S3: Very strong final season, with good pace on one side and a good political build on the other (SPOILERS)
28 April 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I'm not sure why it took me a year since I saw season two to get around to watching the third season of Forbrydelsen, I guess there is so much "easier" viewing that it just gets bumped even though I know it is of high quality. It is also the reason it takes me a little minute to get into it, remember where the main character was, work out the new ones and so on. In this third (and final) season, things seem even tighter than the second season (which itself was a massive focusing exercise after the good but overlong first season). In this season we have the usual mix of a main crime and also politics in the background, with the assumption that the two will come together at one or more points. This is the case here and, although the formula means you know this, it still works because of how well written this season is as a crime story.

The plot has plenty of twists and turns throughout and it is consistently engaging from start to finish. Side issues such as Lund's family, relationships etc, don't feel like distractions because they feed into her character and the characters are as important as the events. There are some examples of convenient writing here that need you to just go with it, even though it doesn't make sense. For example, the perpetrator is shot by Lund from a short distance away but manages to completely disappear if the few seconds she takes to get to him, likewise outside the Prime Minister's office the chase ends the same way; I also thought that they dragged out the "body at the bottom of the river" thing for longer than it could bare dramatically. These are understandable as they pace the story out and keep it moving, but it still smacks of lazy writing on one or two occasions.

Otherwise the story is dark and engaging. As a character Lund is very strong and very well played by Gråbøl; driven by her work and although trying to change to make up for her past, still sucked in and consumed by the case in the same way. Gråbøl portrays this in her tension, in her bad decisions and from the face down through body language. This is vital because ultimately, as difficult an ending as it is, it stands or falls based on how convincing her character is in her consumption and inability to walk away – even when a second chance with her family is there, she cannot break the pattern of who she is. The other performances are equally good, with Suurballe consistent good support, Lie Kaas, le Dous, Berthelsen and others in many roles being strong. The look and feel of the show is dark, making best use of the long nights to have near continual cold and darkness to help set the mood of the show.

It is not a perfect season and it does have moments of convenient writing, but this third season is tight and thrilling, with plenty going on and a satisfyingly dark and cynical tone. The character of Lund is key to a lot of it working and, although I have issues with the nature of the ending, this season is very strong and mostly satisfying.
