Storyline

Diane and Alicia represent Dale Lamborn who is in Federal Court accused of embezzlement and filing fraudulent tax returns. A key piece of prosecution evidence is a taped conversation between Lamborn and his same-sex spouse. Diane and Alicia argue that it should be excluded as it is a confidential communication with a spouse. The prosecution, lawyer Bucky Stabler, argues that the Defense of Marriage Act does not recognize same sex spouses. Into the fray comes high-profile lawyer Jeremy Breslow, a strong advocate of same sex marriage. It's not clear to Diane and Alicia that he has Lamborn's best interest at heart. Meanwhile, Alicia's mother shows up once again widowed - he was her third husband - but in need of legal advice as she has been disinherited. Thanksgiving dinner proves to be just a bit too stressful. Written by garykmcd

Defense of Marriage ***
26 November 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The case involving the gay married men is often confusing, especially when it comes to the lawyer, who has argued cases before the supreme court. He joins Lockhart Gardner in the case despite the fact that he has his own agenda. He wants the guys to lose so that he can argue a much broader case in the court.

The sidebar story in this episode is much better. Stockard Channing co-stars as Alicia's mother. She is quite an active woman with 3 marriages and an apparent affair all behind her. Her 3rd husband's son is ready to take her to court when his father dies suddenly and he claims that his father had changed his will after learning of her latest escapades. Channing is quite effective here as the absentee mother.

Apparently, Cary is stating that his bruised face is as a result of basketball playing other than really what happened.

Archie Panjabi's Kalinda takes a backseat here and Alan Cumming's role as Eli Gold is non-existent here and it's showing.
