"Cinematically romantic, consistently situational and copacetic..."
17 February 2014 | by (Norway) – See all my reviews

Swedish directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein's fourth feature film which was written by Swedish screenwriter Cilla Jackert, is inspired by the lyrics and songs of Swedish musician Håkan Hellström. It premiered in Sweden, was screened in the Nordic Focus section at the 41st Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund 2013, was shot on locations in Sweden and is a Swedish production which was produced by producers Malcolm Lidbeck and David Olsson. It tells the story about a man named Pål from Hisingen, Gothenburg in Sweden who lives with his grandfather named Rolle and who spends most of his time with his friends named Johnny and Lena. Pål has kept his talent for singing to himself for many years, but when his friend Johnny introduces him to a female singer whom he instantly takes a liking to, he starts singing to make her notice him.

Distinctly and engagingly directed by Swedish filmmakers Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, this finely paced fictional tale which is narrated by the main character, from multiple viewpoints and mostly from his point of view, draws a heartrending portrayal of a Swedish aspiring musician's struggle to come out as a singer and how his childhood friendships are affected by his new relationship with a woman named Eva who asks him to write a song about her. While notable for its atmospheric and variegated milieu depictions, reverent cinematography by cinematographer Erik Sohlström, production design by production designer Wilda Wiholm, costume design by costume designer Ulrika Sjölin and use of sound, colors and light, this character-driven and narrative-driven story about music and friendship where a woman is striving to tell her friend what she has been meaning to say to him for a long time, depicts four dense studies of character and contains a great and timely score by composer Adam Nordén.

This charmingly humorous, musical-like and eloquently conversational drama which wears its heart on its sleeve, which is set during a summer in Sweden in the 21st century and where one begins dealing with the wrong crowd, one painfully witnesses the one she cares for giving all his attention to someone else and one becomes so attracted to his new acquaintance that he almost forgets the ones whom has been with him since he was a child, is impelled and reinforced by its cogent narrative structure, substantial character development, rhythmic continuity, Swedish lyrics : "She you once loved and maybe still do. Does it mean anything? No, maybe nothing or maybe everything really…" and the singular acting performances by Swedish actor Adam Lundgren, Swedish actress Josefin Nedlén, Swedish actor Jonathan Andersson and Swedish actress Disa Östrand. A cinematically romantic, consistently situational and copacetic narrative feature.
