Melissa McCarthy is the hottest name in comedy right now — even hotter than the boys.
With Fox’s “The Heat” scoring an impressive $39 million Stateside debut this weekend, the comedic actress proved she can not only compete in a mostly male-driven genre, she’s capable of dominating it.
“The Heat,” co-starring Sandra Bullock, easily won the weekend’s face-to-face standoff with Sony’s male duo actioner, “White House Down,” which disappointed with $24.9 million. But the comparisons for McCarthy to other comedies and their male stars go much deeper than this weekend’s direct B.O. showdown alone.
Looking at the first few breakout hits for such male stars including Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Jason Bateman, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, and it’s clear McCarthy is doing it better. The first two films in which she starred — “Bridesmaids,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination, and “The Identity Thief” — became hugely successful Stateside, »

Yes, folks, "White House Down" flopped at the box-office. Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx were no match for the star power of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy whose "The Heat" triumphed at No. 2 with a $40 million debut. "White House Down?" $25.7 million and with a reported budget of $150 million, it's a certifiable flop! Worst than "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer," and "The Hangover Part III."
So what happened? Well, first, there was a movie called "Olympus Has Fallen" that shared the same DNA as "White House Down." And actually, I found that movie better than the Tatum-Foxx collaboration. Why? Because it had a singular vision -- the terrorists are bad, but don't worry, Gerard Butler is here to save the day. Its simplicity is what saved the film.
"White House Down" has a lot of angles that people were not able to connect the dots. Is it about White House being attacked? »

With The Heat scoring the top spot at the box office this past weekend, driven by the comedic power of Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, people seem to be in the mood for buddy cop films, which could very well explain why today we are getting the very first trailer for the new comedy Ride Along (via the film's official YouTube channel). Directed by Tim Story, who scored a big hit last year with his adaptation of Steve Harvey's Think Like A Man, the film stars Hart as a school security guard named Ben who has fallen deeply in love with his girlfriend (Tika Sumpter). He wants to ask for her hand in marriage, but instead of seeking her father's approval, he instead needs to reach out to her brother James (Ice Cube), a hardcore police officer who isn't a big fan our protagonist. When Ben tells his potential »

The Heat grossed an impressive $40 million this weekend, putting it on track to be Melissa McCarthy's second hit comedy in the last six months. Sure, some of that had to do with co-lead Sandra Bullock, a genuine movie star. But Bullock was the straight woman; it was McCarthy who had to bear most of the comedic burden. This was also the case in Identity Thief, which got middling reviews yet did incredibly well, grossing $135 million domestically on the back of McCarthy's appeal. On a weekend when the fourth-place debut of Channing Tatum's White House Down dampened Hollywood's hopes that they had a new action star who could ensure surefire hits, McCarthy has emerged as comedy's new sure thing ... at least for now. But how long can it last? She's at a point where the decisions she makes over the next few years could either position her as »

This summer is proving that when it comes to stars at the box office, it's the right fit and the movie that matter more than their wattage. The past weekend's $40 million opening of Fox's "The Heat" certainly suggests Melissa McCarthy is a bona fide box-office force, coming on the heels of "Identity Thief," still easily the year's biggest comedy. "She's definitely becoming a star, but this movie had a lot of things going for it," said Exhibitor Relations VP and senior analysts Jeff Bock. He cited the legitimately funny script, McCarthy's chemistry »

Buddy action movies rise and fall on the chemistry shared between the leads. Audiences felt Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy had plenty, so The Heat became a weekend smash. The same ticket buyers didn’t buy into Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, so White House Down struggled. Ride Along shouldn’t have such problems. Pairing comedian Kevin Hart with tough guy Ice Cube for a buddy-cop comedy looks like a masterstroke, if the teaser trailer for Tim Story’s upcoming film is any indication. The set up is short, sweet and incredibly simple. Hart plays a security guard who’s trying to impress his girlfriend’s brother (Ice Cube). In order to prove himself, he agrees to go on a police-sanctioned Ride Along....

After Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock took the box office by storm with an impressive opening weekend of just over $39 million for their R-rated cop comedy The Heat, next year will see Kevin Hart and Ice Cube team up in a squad car as well. Ride Along is a new comedy from Think Like a Man and Fantastic Four director Tim Story which follows high-school security guard Ben (Hart) trying desperately to show decorated Atlanta detective James (Cube) that he’s more than just a video-game junkie who’s unworthy of James’ sister, Angela (Tika Sumpter). The only way to do that is to go on a ride along. Watch! Here's the teaser trailer for Tim Story's Ride Along from the film's YouTube channel: When a fast-talking guy (Kevin Hart) joins his girlfriend’s brother (Ice Cube), a hot-tempered cop, to patrol the streets of Atlanta, he gets entangled »

How's this for a dose of girl power? In the newly released flick The Heat, which took the No. 2 spot at the box office this weekend, A-listers Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy get teamed up as uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn and gutsy Boston cop Shannon Mullins in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. With neither of them ever working with a partner before, they immediately face some power struggles (which is always fun to watch). But their pairing instantly becomes one of our favorite female cop duos, along with these three 1. Ah, the dreaded Boston accent. There's the good. There's the bad. There's also the not-sure-if-that's-good-or-that's-just-how–Mark Wahlberg–actually-talks. Now with Showtime's newest drama, Ray Donovan, a new contender has stepped up to the (Bawston Red Sawks) plate. Paula Malcomson, playing Donovan's wife, Abby, has immediately emerged as one of this year's worst, complaining about her husband's absence and tragically pronouncing "Jersey Shore" like an actual spring break reveller doing a drunken impression of Ben Affleck. In comparison, box-office winnner The Heat features an entire family full of Boston natives — including Melissa McCarthy. They don't have fantastic Boston accents, but mixing up "narc" and "knock" does seems to be problem some Bostonians might have. »

Every Friday night, Movies.com sends cinephiles (and newlyweds) Sarah and Joe Piccirillo to see a film. Afterwards, they answer a few questions about it. Below is their discussion. The Heat Synopsis: Can by-the-book FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) work with local detective Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) to take down a drug lord? Think Bad Boys meets Bridesmaids. Plus, Joey McIntyre. Was this a good date movie? Joe: After enduring Identity Thief I was dreading this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. For a date movie, it’s okay – it’s funny and harmless. There’s a lot of estrogen here and that’s either a blessing or a curse. Sarah: It didn’t create a sexy vibe. Despite buckets of...

"White House Down" was supposed to be one of the surefire hits of the summer.
Channing Tatum became a bona fide movie star last year with a sleeper hit trifecta of "The Vow," "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike" (not to mention being named People's Sexiest Man Alive). Jamie Foxx was coming off his biggest box office success to date with the Oscar nominated "Django Unchained." And director Roland Emmerich has experience both directing blockbuster hits ("2012," "The Day After Tomorrow") and destroying the White House in a patriotic summer movie sensation ("Independence Day").
But even with that pedigree and high profile pre-release hype dating all the way back to Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars ABC special (where Foxx and Tatum turned catchy/silly slow jam "Channing All Over Your Tatum" into a viral hit), "White House Down" shocked Hollywood with a embarrassingly limp $25.7 million estimated opening weekend.

Sandra Bullock and her son, Louis, spent a sweet afternoon at the Natural History Museum in La on Friday. The twosome held hands as they walked around the park, where Louis sported a big grin on his face. Sandra made the most of her time on the West Coast before heading to Sydney over the weekend to promote The Heat. She touched down at the airport in Australia on Sunday and boarded a boat in Sydney Harbor this morning. Sandra has been hard at work on the film's press tour lately - she premiered the buddy cop flick in NYC alongside costar Melissa McCarthy last week, and we sat down with them to talk about their hilarious collaboration. Monday morning brought good news for the girls, as it was announced that the action-comedy took second place in its opening weekend after Disney-Pixar's Monsters University. View Slideshow › »

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy brought The Heat against Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx at the box office.
The Fox action-comedy starring the funny ladies as mismatched detectives earned $40 million in second place in its opening weekend, topping the $25.7 million debut haul of Sony's White House Down, according to studio estimates.
The Disney-Pixar animated prequel Monsters University remained box-office valedictorian in its second weekend, earning $46.1 million in first place. »

Well, turns out that Melissa McCarthy is bankable, and not just as an amusing bit player (though she can do that) or an Emmy-winning television actress (yup, she did that, too) or as a scene-stealing supporting actress (even though she does that, and particularly did that while also stealing puppies), but as an honest-to-goodness comedy star. Not sure about that, are you? What if we told you that McCarthy is now a half-billion-dollar star, co-starring in just five films in the past two years that have racked up more than five hundred million dollars at the domestic box office alone? McCarthy’s latest starring film, The Heat, is currently estimated to have pulled in a tidy $40m at the weekend box office, which brings McCarthy’s domestic box office haul since her breakout role in Bridesmaids to a cool $521m (including Bridesmaids, This is 40, Identity Thief, The Hangover Part III, and »

Audiences have warmed up to "The Heat," with the Melissa McCarthy-Sandra Bullock buddy cop comedy hauling in $40 million on its opening weekend. So it makes sense, then, that director Paul Feig would already be at work on a sequel.
"We've got ['The Heat' screenwriter] Katie Dippold writing away on one," Feig told Yahoo! Movies. "We had an idea that we thought was really fun. ... I just love these characters so much. I want to see them fighting more crime and having more fun."
Considering the film's surprise smash success at the box office, it looks like audiences want to see more of Mullins and Ashburn, too. And that success could also work out for another project Feig had been developing, called "Dumb Jock," which was to star McCarthy and "Bridesmaids" co-star Jon Hamm.
"I'm writing with them in mind," Feig said in a 2011 interview with Movieline, "and it's just a love »

Given the choice between two duos of hilariously mismatched size and sensibility, audiences gave the slight edge to Monsters University over The Heat this weekend, preferring to watch a bickering friendship blossom against the ivory walls of monster academia, rather than the far uglier streets of South Boston. Still, The Heat’s $40 million take was a much bigger victory than its second-place finish might suggest: Not only did its opening outpace Bridesmaids, it also beat out The Blind Side to become Sandra Bullock’s highest-opening film ever, reaffirming the film’s overarching lesson that Sandra Bullock should just loosen »

The Heat is the surprise hit of the weekend, bringing in a whopping $40 million and continuing Melissa McCarthy's remarkable winning streak of pretty much whatever comedy she wants to make. Between this and last year's 21 Jump Street (and even this weekend's other release White House Down, in its own way) we seem to have found ourselves in a kind of meta-revival of the buddy cop movie. Everyone knows that the genre is done to death, so they're working overtime to make something unique out of it-- like a story about two women, or a meta-comedy that knows it's a comedy, or. well, who knows what might be next? We haven't been this excited about seeing two mismatched cops take on a case since Murtaugh and Riggs first got on each others nerves, and we're already scheming up with more pairs of unlikely partners who we could see bring down »

Paul Feig has been talking about "Dumb Jock" for quite some time. The comedy, which Feig wrote for Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm, was first announced in June of 2011, roughly one month after the opening of "Bridesmaids."
"I'm very excited about that project," Feig said during an interview with Movieline in August of that year. "I'm writing with them in mind, and it's just a love story that I've always wanted to write, that I think will be really funny, but will play much more real than most quote-unquote romantic comedies. Fingers crossed, I get them to do it."
Unfortunately, it looks like Feig wasn't able to get them to do it.
"Yeah, I wrote it, and the studio loved it, but Jon and Melissa didn't want to do it," Feig said in an interview with Grantland last week. "It's one of my favorite things I've ever written. Maybe we'll relaunch it. »

"White House Down" is a flop, no matter how many fans of the film chastise the American public for not showing up. Roland Emmerich's latest feature was budgeted at a reported $150 million, but earned just $25.7 million at the box office this past weekend. That's a lower opening weekend tally than 2013 disasters like "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer" and "The Hangover Part III"; that's lower than the R-rated, similarly themed "Olympus Has Fallen"; that's just $200,000 more than "Battleship."
"We couldn't be more proud or supportive of the film Roland, Channing and Jamie created. This weekend's launch is just the beginning," a Sony spokesperson said to THR. "While 'White House Down' opened in a few smaller countries this weekend, it will not begin to open in major overseas territories until mid-July and it will continue to roll out overseas well into the fall."
That optimism aside, "White House Down »
