Stunning

If you know the basic summary of this episode then what you read here is not a spoiler. Naruto is nearing the climax of the battle against Pain to avenge his late master, Jiraiya who left Naruto with the task of bringing peace to the ninja world. Now while he's grown stronger, this episode shows his reaction to the consequences of his bold act to face Pain alone. Not insulting. Naruto's rage completely overcomes him and his anger allows the Kyūbi's will to overcome him, rampaging viciously on Pain throughout the episode.

Naruto's fight against the all powerful Pain, who just committed the unspeakable before Naruto's eyes, leaves no more arguing of ideals between these two. This episode has stunning visuals, animations and art(despite a few odd moments with the art), it was a classic and destructive battle between a godly figure, and a Godzilla type of monster, though the latter is the hero.in terms of themes, it's a great episode too. Naruto has reached his breaking point in trying to find a way of achieving peace, which is hard in a world of ninjas. He says he'll break the chain of hatred yet succumbs to this chain completely, shown in how he tries to murder someone who he has hatred for after supposedly murdering someone he cares about. Even when winning against Pain, Naruto is still losing against him in terms of philosophy, which can get the viewer thinking about how peace really can be achieved. Some parts of the animations seem a bit Looney Toonish and strange, but this episode was one of the best of the series, around top 10, it falls under the category of a Nuke Episode in Naruto. Stunning action and visuals too(usually) 10/10

Manga anime as Art

I spotted this episode by luck will zapping TV, and I was mesmerized.

The drawing is rough, animation is virtuoso. I've never seen an usually poorly animated manga so packed with frame, as each of the 24 images/second see a metamorphosis of corpses and matter. Drawing seems poor but don't get wrong, as a professional drawer I can tell that the free will behind need an off-of-this-world talent, remembering more of American indie animator genius Bill Plympton than Looney Tunes, like I read somewhere. After some research, seems that director Atsushi Wakabayashi was the real genius behind it, as for episodes 30, 71 and 133 of the original Naruto series, that I can't encourage you enough to watch.

Thanks not to this episode 167, it forced me to watch the whole series, who didn't live up to that standard, except for the sparks above. But in the end it worth it, as this episode is also the apex of the story, and the riskiness of in animation deserves all the praises for the Pierrot studio.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode has a different cinematography than the usual. Sometimes was well, but other times looked the characters looked deformed, like Pain. The battle between the Kyuubi and Pain starts. The transformation is strange and the Fox appears with four tails straight. As the fight goes on, the creature reaches six tails, and soon, both get away from Konoha. About all this, surely the animation sequences were special, but it's not the most important for the story. How Pain managed to survive (even though he is just Yahiko's dead body with black metal bars) is unexplainable. He uses the elements water and rock during the battle, and well, this should be logic considering what Jiraiya said about Nagato, still, Tendo Pain didn't use that power on the previous fights. Anyway, at Konoha, Sakura has the same sensations than in Tenchi bridge, and realizes that Naruto has transformed again in the Kyuubi. The Hyuga shinobi not only confirms it, he tells that reached the six tails. She is alarmed, and stunned to learn what triggered that. Gamakichi (who still holds Tsunade), laughs because Pain is having a deserved beaten, but Sakura gives him a lecture, and tells Katsuyu to warn everyone to look for shelter. She also intends to rescue Hinata (as the fight moved away), and wonders where is Yamato to stop the Kyuubi. When Shikaku learns what happened, he thinks the same, where is Yamato. Turns out that he was on a mission to locate Kabuto, with Anko and Sai. Still, his hand burns on the sealing mark, warning the number of six tails. He realizes it's an emergency and rushes back to Konoha. In the meantime, Hashirama's necklace, still on Naruto, reacts and intends to seal the Kyuubi. But without Yamato, the necklace doesn't work, so the creature grabs it, and destroys it. As the battle continues, Nagato brings Pain close enough to him in order to perform a powerful technique, the Chibaku Tensei. As the Kyuubi forms the eight tails, a big amount of rocks break from the ground and start forming a giant sphere, where the Kyuubi is trapped somehow. As Yamato runs, he sees the number nine on his hand. On his subconcious, Naruto falls in disgrace, after all what happened, his failure to find answers for peace and hatred, to stop Pain. The nine tailed Fox asks him to release him, he will end his suffering, and destroy the ones who hurted him. He tempts Naruto, who slowly starts to surrender. His eyes turn red, and proceeds to break the seal. But in the last second, a tall blonde man who was watching goes to stop him. Naruto falls before the Kyuubi's prison, and the 4th Hokage takes his hand, helping him to get up.

Who could have thought Naruto would reach this state? Shikamaru couldn't believe it, and Sakura neither. Yamato, less than anyone. Should be implied that he went on a mission away because he trusted Naruto. After hurting Sakura while being transformed, Yamato knew he wouldn't surrender to the Kyuubi's power again. But he also couldn't guess that Pain would corner Naruto the way he did, or that Hinata would make such stupidity (I believed Shikaku would say something like what dumb reckless girl). The necklace was destroyed. Poor Tsunade. Sakura, as usual during most of Shippuden, was very well written. She was sad and worried for Naruto, but also kept herself strong, and directed the situation to protect the villagers. She inherited Tsunade's personality. Then, the best was without doubt Minato's appearance. I wonder what he was doing there, but came in the perfect time. He stopped the Kyuubi once again. The father saving his son. And this simply leads back to Hinata's actions. Because she didn't know Naruto, his harsh reality as a jinchuriki, the danger of the Kyuubi, she made a stupid selfish decision that could have caused massive destruction to Konoha and the world. That was a big mistake of Kishimoto. I can't believe how many young fans acclaim her decision considering how needless it was. If the Nine tailed Fox appeared completely, no one could have stopped him. If it wasn't for Minato Namikaze (again), Konoha would have been completely destroyed by the Kyuubi.
