"Silently and mysteriously cinematographic..."
18 January 2015 | by (Norway) – See all my reviews

French screenwriter and director Fabienne Godet's second feature film which she wrote with screenwriters Claire Mercier and Franck Vassal, is inspired by musicals and paintings. It premiered in France, was shot on locations in Egypt, Belgium and Luxembourg and is a France-Belgium co-production which was produced by producers Bertrand Fauvre and Sophie Quiédeville. It tells the story about a citizen of Bruxelles, Belgium named Antoine who found his profession during his studies and who looks after his friend named Matéo.

Distinctly and precisely directed by French filmmaker Fabienne Godet, this quietly paced fictional tale which is narrated mostly from the main characters' viewpoints, draws a reflective and singular portrayal of a multi-talented youth worker and seeker of the mysterious named Elena whom is working on her thesis and who on new year's eve encounters a friendly stranger. While notable for its atmospheric milieu depictions, distinct cinematography by French cinematographer Crystel Fournier and American cinematographer Michael Ackerman and production design by production designer Laurie Colson, this dialog-driven story about a talented person whom after listening to and observing an interpretation of a piano piece discovers what he had lost and becomes more genuine, depicts some densely humane studies of character and contains a great and timely score by composer Françoise-Eudes Chanfrault.

This naturally humorous, understated and delicately mystical character piece which is set mostly in Belgium in the 21st century and where a life-saving act initiates a friendship and new prospects and possibilities, is impelled and reinforced by its cogent narrative structure, substantial character development, rhythmic continuity, majestic cinematic language, unwavering atmosphere, telling use of music, scenes in the country and reverent acting performances by Belgian actor Benoït Poolevorde and Greek actress Ariane Labed. A silently and mysteriously cinematographic narrative feature.
