- As auditions for the school production of "Grease" get under way, Marley, Jake, Kitty and Ryder compete for the lead roles.
- Open with Artie visiting Finn in the shop. Finn's pretty down about how things are going in his life. Artie things he need to find an artistic outlet and suggests he co-direct the musical with him.
Blaine tells Sam he's not sure about doing Grease. He's miserable since breaking up with Kurt. Kurt won't return his calls or text him. Sam assures him he'll get through it. This leads to Blaine singing "Hopelessly Devoted."
We see that Finn is directing the musical and Blaine does end up auditioning for Grease. Artie thinks Blaine should be Danny, but Blaine breaks down and says he can't do it given his romantic life. He thinks he could maybe handle Teen Angel, a part with one scene. Finn gets up and leaves the audition, saying it was a bad idea.
Artie chases Finn down in the hallway and says he's called in some help. Mike and Mercedes walk down the hallway. They'll be coaching vocals and dance for the musical
Will and Emma discuss her going to DC with him during a conversation with Coach Beiste. Will says all he wants is for them to be together and asks her to consider it. She says she'll go, but looks concerned.
Needing more men for the musical, Finn drops by football practice. Beiste suggests a sophomore loner named Ryder who has a lazy streak.
Unique tells Marley he doesn't want to audition, since the only part he wants is Betty Rizzo and everybody thinks he's a joke in drag. Sue appears from one of the stalls and tells him she'll never allow Unique to play Rizzo and throw gender roles into a tizzy. Uniqe and Marley sing Pink's "Blow Me." Unique auditions for Rizzo.
Finn strikes up a friendship with Ryder, who is struggling with his grades. Finn tells him Glee club helped his grades.
While Finn and Artie work on the set Rider shows up and says he'll audition for Grease. Finn sings "Juke Box Hero," having Rider follow him. Finn surprises him by saying afterwards that he has already auditioned.
Ryder strikes up a conversation with Marley about them working together in the musical. This seems to make Jake jealous. Kitty tells Marley she's going to audition and wants to take the Sandy part away from her.
Kitty and Jake audition together, performing "Everybody Talks." It seems to be well-received.
The directors discuss their initial thoughts. Finn and Artie like Unique for Rizzo, which causes Sue to bring them into Figgins' office. Will defends the notion of cross-gender casting. Finn responds that he has nothing to lose and won't be intimidates. He slips and refers to Sue's baby as "retarded," then immediately apologizes. She walks out of the office without saying a word.
Beiste tells Emma she shouldn't lie to Will about how she really feels about going to DC. She doesn't want to get in the way of his dream. Beiste warns her she needs to find something to be interested in when she gets there.
Tina is mad at Mike for not checking with her before showing up and choreographing the musical. She doesn't want to take part.
The directors hold dance auditions to "Born to Hand Jive."
Finn tells Unique he wants him to be Rizzo. Unique talks about not being comfortable in his own skin. He says he's ready for whatever comes his way.
Finn posts the cast list. Brittany is Cha-Cha, Tina is Jane, Blaine is Teen Angel, Ryder is Danny and Marley is Sandy. Kitty is upset she got a minor part. Sue walks by and sees that Unique is Rizzo.
Will tells Emma to tell him what's on her mind. She says she doesn't want to go to DC with him and sits him down. She's worried that if she goes with him she'll pull away. Emma thinks she'll be closer to him emotionally if she remains farther away geographically. Will ultimately agree with her. The plan is for them to get married when he comes back.
Will tells Finn that he's leaving for a few months. Will wants him to take over while he's gone.
