Bathtub Killer
1 May 2014 | by See all my reviews

In September 1996, schoolteacher Christine Vu was strangled to death, taped, and placed face down in the bathtub at her Arlington, Texas apartment. The body was found by her boyfriend, who for various reasons became a prime suspect. Implausible though his story may have appeared, it checked out, and on Christmas Eve, another woman was found raped and murdered in strikingly similar circumstances; her apartment was a short walk from Miss Vu's. This time the victim was black rather than Vietnamese; clearly a potential serial killer is on the loose. Bad though this is, at least the police now have good forensics, so it will be only a matter of time before the perpetrator is brought to book, hopefully before he can claim his third victim.

Another innocent man becomes the prime suspect, again for bona fide reasons. A third suspect also turns out to be a false lead. Two years after the first murder, the Bathtub Killer strikes again, but this time he bites off more than he can chew, or rather his victim, Chima Benson does. Threatening to kill her unless she submits to oral rape, she acquiesces. And then bites him. Hard!

Although he beats her severely, this is the end of the road; a thumbprint from the scene of the second murder leads to unlikely suspect Dale Devon Scheanette, who is arrested. More incriminating evidence is recovered from his property, and best of all, he has a bite mark on his penis. Also, semen found at all three crime scenes matches him, and he is linked to no fewer than four other rapes.

Texas is the wrong place to commit these kind of murders, and Scheanette was executed by lethal injection on February 10, 2009.

The documentary makers talk to original suspect Thang Chi Kuu, investigators and family members, and to Chima Benson. There are also reconstructions.
