Run The Tide – Review

Review by Zach Nix

Taylor Lautner, much like previous teen idol Zac Efron, is a young male actor who became a star after appearing in a string of films marketed towards teens, specifically the Twilight franchise. However, and much like Efron, Lautner’s impenetrable stardom eventually ended with his franchise’s conclusion. Therefore, he then began that awkward transitional period as he tried to escape from the teen idol status that he had been labeled with in order to prove his legitimacy as an actor outside of the Twilight saga. His short lived stints with action (i.e. Abduction, Tracers) and comedy (i.e. Grown Ups 2, The Ridiculous 6) certainly didn’t help. However, Lautner’s latest turn in director Soham Mehta’s debut film, Run the Tide, finally showcases him as a dramatic talent to be reckoned with.

The tale of Mehta’s independent family drama has been done in many variations before,

Movie Review: Run The Tide won’t score Taylor Lautner the prestige his Twilight costars have earned

In the years since the Twilight franchise made them megastars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have worked with a remarkable number of world-class directors: Olivier Assayas, Kelly Reichardt, Woody Allen, Ang Lee, David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, James Gray. The werewolf leg of that love triangle, however, does not appear to be in similarly prestigious demand. Taylor Lautner has headlined a couple of forgettable thrillers (major points if you could recall even the titles Abduction and Tracers), and been part of the ensemble in a couple of Adam Sandler comedies, but nothing on his post-Twilight résumé is even halfway decent, much less impressive. The exceedingly earnest indie drama Run The Tide seems to be Lautner’s stab at respectability, but he’s chosen poorly—this is bargain-basement schmaltz, too blandly folksy even for Sundance. Sheer toothiness can’t elevate drab material.

Thanks to The Force Awakens, the name Rey is ...

Busan: Canadian-Set Thriller ‘Numb’ Debuts at Fest
Director Jason R. Goode and producer Dylan Jenkinson teamed on the shorts “The Planting” and “Late” before making their feature debuts with “Numb,” world premiering at Busan in the Midnight Passion selection. U.S. sales agents Cinema Management Group are presenting the film at the Asian Film Market. The film has already been pre-sold to Front Row for the Middle East, Stars Media for ex-Yugoslavia, Sandrew Metronome for Scandinavia and Associated Euromedia for Turkey.

“We always had a global audience in mind when we were developing the script and making the film,” Goode said. “The story for ‘Numb’ is a very visceral and relatable one for people across cultures, so we’ve always imagined the film drawing attention outside of North America. So when Busan invited the film, we were ecstatic,” he continued.

Numb” is a Canada-set survival thriller where an impecunious couple find Gps coordinates that supposedly lead to

The film will debut theatrically at the end of the year. Peter Firth and Jennifer Ehle co-star in the film, which is a follow-up to the popular BBC television series “Spooks.” In a negative review, Variety‘s Guy Lodge faulted the picture for being a “strained, superfluous spinoff.”

‘Tracers’ DVD Review

As a movie reviewer there’s nothing more difficult than reviewing an average movie. With terrible movies you can spew forth all the bile and hatred you want, with good (or great) movies you can rave over each an every aspect that got you excited. But with an average movie there’s very often little to say beyond “it’s Ok” – and that’s what Tracers is, just Ok.

Down on his luck Cam (Taylor Lautner) is barely scraping by. Drowning in debt and living out of a garage, he is desperately looking for an out. Cam’s prayers are seemingly answered when he meets the beautiful and mysterious Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos). She

Tracers DVD Review

Director: Daniel Benmayor

Starring: Taylor Lautner, Marie Avgeropoulos, Rafi Gavron, Sam Medina, Adam Rayner

(Free) Running Time: 94 Minutes

Certificate: 12

Taylor Lautner has picked up a bad rep after the Twilight saga and whether this is down to the films he’s choosing or his acting ability seems something akin to bullying in the industry and Tracers, although not ground-breaking, really shows off his stunt skills and the gritty nature of the New York streets suit his persona.

The one thing that doesn’t do him, or anyone involved, any favours is the basic script that’s full of clichés and doesn’t bring enough life to the characters. Saying this, there’s a few twists and turns I didn’t see coming that means there are definite moments of excitement and consequence. Daniel Benmayor’s direction gets interesting when you’re riding or running along with the action but there
