‘Smilf’ Review: This Single Mom Is a Laudable Filmmaker in Showtime’s Unflinching New Comedy

‘Smilf’ Review: This Single Mom Is a Laudable Filmmaker in Showtime’s Unflinching New Comedy
Birthed from Frankie Shaw’s Sundance award-winning short film, “Smilf” joins the growing canon of series that are far better than the knee-jerk reaction to their titles. Like “Cougar Town,” “Trophy Wife,” and “Happy Endings” before it, the new half-hour Showtime original transcends its meaning — the “s” stands for single and the “Milf” for, well, you know — quickly and repeatedly in the first three episodes. Occasionally, it can feel like an ill-fitting short gets tossed into Shaw’s first TV show, but the serialized majority of the story nevertheless marks the arrival of an adventurous and compassionate vision.

Shaw stars as Bridgette, a Bostonian living in Southie who works as a part-time tutor, part-time actress, and part-time overeater. (Bridgette binge eats on occasion.) She’s a single mom who always, always, always needs to be available for her son, Larry Bird (played by sisters Alexandra Mary Reimer and Anna Chanel Reimer

Since then, Rihanna’s kept the project extremely hush-hush, but she’s (finally!) giving makeup fanatics a behind-the-scenes preview of what’s to come.

The 4 Worst New Fall TV Show Titles & How We’d Fix Them

The 4 Worst New Fall TV Show Titles & How We’d Fix Them
Now that the Big 5 networks have unveiled their new fall shows (with a few midseason offerings thrown in), we can get down to really investing in what we’re going to see this year. But first, let’s address an issue that we’re sure many viewers have when it comes to getting excited about new shows: really awful titles.

What’s in a name? Well, if you ask “Trophy Wife,” everything. The critically acclaimed series didn’t feel like the usual sitcom fare. Its humor was smart, ironic and a little bit daffy, and the performances were delightful and nuanced. Sadly, during its entire 22 episodes, it couldn’t ever escape bubble status, and in the end, really lame marketing tactics was its downfall. The show wasn’t about a trophy wife at all, and in fact, that title undermined its strong, feminist voice. The show never saw a Season

Bailee Madison to Star in ‘Someone Else’s Summer’ Movie Adaptation (Exclusive)

Bailee Madison to Star in ‘Someone Else’s Summer’ Movie Adaptation (Exclusive)
Bailee Madison will star in the movie adaptation of Rachel Bateman’s coming-of-age novel “Someone Else’s Summer.”

Producer Beth Grossbard landed the option and will produce via her eponymous company. The novel will be published this month by Running Press Kids/Hachette Book Group and is going to auction for international rights.

Someone Else’s Summer” follows a young woman whose life gets turned upside down after her sister dies on the night of her high school graduation. Madison’s character sets out to honor her sister by fulfilling everything on her summer bucket, including a road trip with her sister’s best friend/the boy next door, which takes them from their sleepy Iowa town to the shores of the Atlantic.

“I’m thrilled such incredible talent is attached to this,” Bateman said. “This story is extremely special to me and I can’t wait to see it

The Best Sitcoms That Need a Revival Now — IndieWire Critics Survey

The Best Sitcoms That Need a Revival Now — IndieWire Critics Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In light of the recent “Roseanne” revival news, which sitcom would you like to see a revival of? (Let’s assume this is feasible from a network, talent, production, etc. standpoint.)

Liz Shannon Miller (@lizlet), IndieWire

So many great sitcoms are personality driven, which makes it hard to remember great premises worth reviving. (And also, when I think about some of my ‘90s favorites, like “Step by Step” or “Friends,” it’s like… Oh, maybe there’s nothing new under the sun.)

But, beyond my eternal wish that someone would remake “Almost Human” as an adorable rom-com about Karl Urban and Robot Michael Ealy falling in

Film Review: ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’

Film Review: ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back’
The man behind the Guggenheim Museum’s solid-gold toilet, Maurizio Cattelan has been described as a prankster, a fraud, an imitator, an innovator, a genius, a xylophone, and “quite possibly the most infuriating smart-ass on the contemporary art scene.” Actually, I have no idea whether any of that previous sentence is true, but it sounds plausible, which is good enough for director Maura Axelrod. A hard-hitting news reporter who took a break from covering international danger zones (like Rio favelas and Afghan front lines) to make the softball art doc “Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back,” Axelrod plays along with her eccentric subject’s insouciant attitude vis à vis his own identity to mostly delightful effect.

Like so many recent films about contemporary artists, the movie functions more as publicity than portrait, reminding viewers within its first two minutes that Cattelan’s work sells at auction for $10 million — as if that

Imaginary Mary Season 1 Review

One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

Sifting through some of the offerings of the 2010s, it’s clear that network executives really want to get in psychological touch with their childhood. The Muppets, Downward Dog, Ted and its sequel, and even superb shows like Wilfred all revolve around the same basic premise of a sad human being at the mercy of a spiritual guide in the form of something innocent they loved as a kid, only for that entity to turn out as raunchy and unappealing as middle aged life.

So you’d think with Imaginary Mary, we could have a chef come in and craft a tasty spin on this familiar concept. But instead, the cooks have taken over ABC’s kitchen, and the finished project isn’t much to look at or get excited about.

The series premiere centers around a fiercely independent workaholic named Alice (played
