Lionsgate adopts 'The Great Gilly Hopkins' for Us

Exclusive: Stephen Herek family film starring Sophie Nelisse set for October release.

Lionsgate Premiere, the studio’s specialty division, has boarded Us distribution on completed comedy-drama The Great Gilly Hopkins.

The Katherine Paterson adaptation, directed by Stephen Herek (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure), will get a multiplatform release from October 7, with theatrical distribution in key cities.

In the family title, Sophie Nelisse (The Book Thief) plays as a wisecracking 11-year-old who is moved between foster homes but meets her match in the shape of foster mum Maime Trotter (Kathy Bates). 

Julia Stiles, Bill Cobbs, Octavia Spencer and Glenn Close co-star.

Script comes from David Paterson (Bridge To Terabithia) who produced with Bill Teitler (Jumanji) and home improvement and energy sector businessman Brian Kennedy of Latium Enterprises, majority owner of UK rugby leage team Sale Sharks.

The film marks Kennedy’s second signficant film investment after 2014 Cannes drama The Homesman.

Cannes: Saban Films Buys Glenn Close Thriller ‘The Girl With All the Gifts’

Saban Films is close to a deal for U.S. distribution rights to “The Girl With All the Gifts,” the company said Friday. The film unfolds in an underground bunker, where children are being examined by scientists in the hopes of finding a cure for a fungal spore that has infected the planet.

The post-apocalyptic thriller stars Glenn Close (“Dangerous Liaisons”), Gemma Arterton (“Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”), Paddy Considine (“The Bourne Ultimatum”) and newcomer Sennia Nanua.

The BFI (British Film Institute) and Creative England financed the film, with Camille Gatin and Angus Lamont producing the picture. Bill Bromiley and Ness Saban negotiated the deal on behalf of Saban Films out of Cannes with Altitude’s Mike Runagall representing the filmmakers.

Launched in 2014, Saban Films has released such films as “The Homesman” starring Tommy Lee Jones, “Tracers” with Taylor Lautner and “A Hologram for the King” toplined by Tom Hanks. Recent »

Rob Zombie's '31' Gets Fall Release Date

Saban Films is acquiring North American distribution rights to horror thriller 31, the latest film from visionary mastermind Rob Zombie (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects Halloween and Lords of Salem). The film stars Sheri Moon Zombie, Golden Globe Nominee Malcolm McDowell, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ginger Lynn Allen, Elizabeth Daily and Meg Foster. Rob Zombie wrote and directed the film, which made its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and will have a September 16th release.
