An over-dramatic mess., 13 June 2012
Author: linkogecko from México, D.F., México

Let me begin by stating that I was just a child when Colosio was murdered, so I hardly remember the events from that time in 1994, and the situation the country was in shortly before and after them. Therefore, there are a few characters in the film that I feel I should recognize from the actual historical events, characters whose allusions to the real people involved in them might be obvious to someone who remembers those days better. However, any good film based on historical events will allow any viewer, regardless of their familiarity (or lack thereof) with them (be it due to age, nationality or whatever reason), to identify the characters, their role in the plot and their motivations.

It's in these aspects that "Colosio" fails monumentally. Not only are the characters and their historical equivalents unrecognizable, they also lack anything that makes us identify with and care for them and their lives and fates, not to mention that their actions have no sense or logic. The Andrés and Verónica family plot, for example: it adds nothing to the story, doesn't make us care for the characters and its manipulative attempt at making us feel sad for them at the end is hilariously transparent. The character of the Doctor perfectly represents the lack of logic to the characters' actions. By the end of the film there is no comprehensible reason for him to have ordered the Colosio investigation in the first place. Bolado's tendency to focus on the blood and violence on screen is gratuitous and unnecessary. The same is true of the extreme close-ups of the actors' features, which keeps us from being able to see the totality of their expressions and performances. These are just the main issues I had with the film, there are many, many more that I will not write about here.

Yet, credit where credit is due. The cinematography, while rather obvious with its warm color tonalities for Tijuana and colder ones for Mexico City, is still one of the best I've seen in recent national films. The actors and actresses also did the best job possible for the poor screenplay they had to work with.
