Love It or Hate It.
2 January 2016 | by (America) – See all my reviews

*I believe that I was a bit too harsh with my first review, this is a deeply revised edit*

1.) The Actors/Characters

As far as I can see, the actors play their parts well. I can't judge the acting since I can't understand a word anyone is saying.

Aelita(Played by Léonie Berthonnaud) looks like an alternative punk rocker.(All due respect to alternative punk rockers)Her pink hair looked fine in animation but in live action she just looks silly. She lacks the level headed, kind and intelligent demeanor she had in the original series.

Odd(Played By Gulliver Bevernaege)while lacking a likeness to the Original has actually improved from the original series.

IMDb's word count is limited so all I'm going to say as far as the rest of the cast, is that Yumi(Melanie Tran),Ulrich(Quentin Merabet) Jeremy(Marin Lafitte) and William (Diego Mestanza) do a good job with their roles.

On a side note, I couldn't help but notice the whitewashing of a well known, or should I say the only black character in the O.S. Sam. There were plenty of colored women on set so claiming there were no auditions is not an excuse.

2.) The Rule Changes So, apparently everyone can deactivate the towers now. This alone slaughters the suspense of the show. Because of this X.A.N.A. has no reason to pursue the destruction of the legacy of Franz Hopper( Which was literally it's ENTIRE goal for self preservation). This was also X.A.N.A's reason for Targeting Aelita. She was the living legacy of Franz Hopper. The reason X.A.N.A. now has no reason to target her or her father is connected directly to a completely nonsensical explanation for X.A.N.A's survival

So this is how it went down...

When Jeremy launched the multi-agent program to destroy X.A.N.A. It implanted "codes" into the Lyoko Warriors. Keep in mind that During X.A.N.A.'s death Aelita was the ONLY loving thing in X.A.N.A.'s reach at this time. And to retrieve these "codes" from the warriors, X.A.N.A. sends specters to hug the characters.... I wish I was making that up. In order to retrieve the codes from the warriors, X.A.N.A. sends indestructible polymorphic superhuman electro kinetic specters to HUG the warriors. Also, for some jarring reason William doesn't have these "codes" despite X.A.N.A. himself emerging from William during it's death.

3.) The Lack of Development

What I mean by this is, This series was blessed enough to receive a revival and with so many changes, there was a noticeable absence of improvement on the original series. There are no new sectors, in fact two of the sectors were removed completely there are no new characters worth mentioning, no new locations and very little build upon the original series. There were so many opportunities missed and chances not taken, it's disappointing to call this travesty a revival since it's only beating a prosthetic horse.

4.) The Enemies

So we have back X.A.N.A., the rogue homicidal Artificial Intelligence that terrorized our heroes in the original series, which would have been fine if he wasn't an uninteresting and inferior copy-paste cut out of the original. Previously, XANA was set on the destruction of humanity here he just seems set on screwing with a group kids.We have "Tyron", who's laughably absurd hair looks like something out of Dr.Seuss book( Seriously, I'm not kidding) The Specters,Practically the main threat of the original series have been reduced to slowly walking pushovers. In the original series, the specters/possessed were sinister villains with taunting dialogue and the most deranged facial expressions and horrific voices. Here, they're just blank silent statues with nothing to offer but Jason Vorhees style chase scenes and banging on a couple of doors.

5.) X.A.N.A. Himself

Possibly the greatest fault with this show. Let's face it, X.A.N.A. was the BEST part of the original series. It was a clever, decisive and deadly foe that would destroy everyone and anything in it's path and acted as force of nature.

Let's look at the interesting ways X.A.N.A. has pounded our hearts and dropped our jaws

-He Rampaged through the city as a Giant Teddy Bear! -He released a gas into the atmosphere that turned flesh to stone!-He guided assault aircraft missiles! -He hijacked a space military laser!-Reversed the effects of gravity! -He as willing to strike with Earth with Meteorites! -He turned simple Music into a paralysis inducing nightmare! -He's raised armies of robotic canines, rats, wasps, plants and even ZOMBIES! -

My point is, X.A.N.A. was the lifeblood of the original series and we wouldn't have loved Code Lyoko as much without him. Here, he does nothing more than send a couple of pushover men in black to hug our heroes while this Tyrone Persona takes the spotlight.

6.) The Finale

I'm not going to spoil this short-lived Dark Horse for you, as much as I don't recommend watching it . All I'm going to say is that it didn't answer the questions that we had at the end of the original CL.

I suppose for a live action low budget, 26-episode series that this could have been a lot worse. I can tell that everyone that was here genuinely wanted to be and thus fans of the original series have a reason to care. Overall, If you were a big fan of "Code Lyoko" for the reasons I listed, you're probably not going to get a kick out of this, but go in with low expectations and you shouldn't be disappointed...too much.
