Jane and Maura investigate the death of a young woman whose body is found in a back alley dumpster. The killer apparently burned her hands to stymie her identification but the police find a driver's license on her. Maura determines that she was asphyxiated and suffered a severe blow to the head. Meanwhile, Jane is after Maura to locate her biological mother and it turns out she already has. She is Dr. Hope Martin a world famous physician who has done a good deal of forensic analysis. Jane arranges for her to come in and try to identify the dead girl. She turns out to be everything Maura could ever hope for in a mother but is determined that she should never know about their connection. As for the dead girl, she is identified as 27 year-old Emma Spencer, a legal intern who worked at the DA's office.
