An incredibly crafted production, but its flaws aren't easily forgivable.

My rating: 6.0/10

My opinion on the film:

Libertador is extremely uneven. It has roughly as many good things as bad ones, and others that left me indifferent, but many of its good things were so great that they often overshadowed its very poor and lame ones. It's an epic film both in the good way and in the bad way, and in basically every frame it is evident that it was an incredibly crafted production. However, its flaws aren't easily forgivable.

Visually it was stunning, with a top-notch cinematography and a camera work that was exquisitely carried out, the score was also remarkable, and the immensity of its sets and locations was simply overwhelming. As a biopic of Simón Bolívar, it was wildly irregular but it did have some fantastic moments. Édgar Ramírez was miscast, yet he clearly did his best with what he was given. The entire cast wasn't bad in general but it wasn't good either.

Its visual qualities served as a distraction, in the good way, when put in contrast with its storytelling-related missteps, which allowed me to enjoy it a lot during most of its running time. But then the final 20 minutes came and what could have been a great flawed film ended up being a flawed, decent-at-best, and insulting film. The insulting part answers to the fact that, as a Venezuelan that knows enough about the history of his country, it was impossible for me to remain impassive towards the insultingly inaccurate ending of this movie, and the fact that the producers were quite possibly influenced or manipulated by Venezuela's current government and its ideas I strongly disagree with makes things even worse concerning how it ended.

However, in general Libertador wasn't so bad. It can be very watchable and much more than that at times, but I didn't like it nor did I hate it either. Something I'm sure of is that if I weren't from Venezuela and therefore an ignorant about its history, I would have liked it a lot better, which means that I wouldn't have much problem in recommending it to non-Venezuelan viewers.
