A cargo ship comes to rest at Portland harbor. Inside, a security guard notices blood dripping from a specific cargo bin. The bin is opened up to reveal writing on the walls in blood ... and dead stowaways on the ground. "What happened to them?" the guard asks his coworker, who doesn't have time to answer. Something -- a GROWLING something -- massacres the helpless men. Cut to Nick's furious fight with Akira Kimura, which ends when Kelly, the detective's mother, shows up to lend a helping and decidedly deadly hand.
Nick is shocked to see mom, who doesn't have time to answer her son's questions at the moment. She flips Kimura's body over to reveal a series of tattoos. Suddenly, they both hear the approaching police. Kelly is gone the moment Nick turns his head. Renard and Wu enter and cuff Kimura, who is still alive. Nick then explains that Juliette is in a coma. "There's nothing I can do," he tells Renard. "They're going to call me if there's a change."
Meanwhile, Monroe and Rosalee test the cat that scratched Juliette. The cat's paws turn a special testing potion blue -- a result that seems to greatly concern Rosalee. Later, Kelly returns and tells her son that she needs to get to Kimura. "I've been following him for a long time," she explains. "He's the last man alive who knows who betrayed us." Mom then explains that Nick's father died in a not-so-accidental car wreck alongside a friend, Gina. Kelly survived, and thought it was safer for Nick if she remained "dead." Monroe then enters -- and is promptly attacked by Kelly. Nick has to pull his aggressive mommy off Monroe. It is quickly explained that they're all friends, much to Kelly's disbelief.
"Juliette isn't in real danger," says Rosalee, explaining that Juliette is under a very powerful and dangerous spell. "It causes memory loss with symptoms comparable to dementia." Rosalee has prepared a potion that will take 16 hours to finish baking. It might not bring Juliette out of the coma, but it will stop the memory loss. Monroe and Rosalee exit, leaving mother and son to awkwardly reconnect. Kelly explains that she has been searching for the killer of her husband and friend for the last two decades. "When I learned a Grimm had the coins, I hoped it wouldn't be you," she says. Mom then explains that she wants to destroy the coins. "They've already taken up too much of our life."
The next morning, Kelly tries to make her son breakfast ... and manages to burn the toast. Her domestic skills are a bit rusty. Nick is then called to the murder scene at the cargo ship. He joins Hank, who spent the previous night clutching a shotgun and popping pills. The partners survey the bloody mess. "I don't think this container was used to to lock anyone out," Nick says. "It was used to lock someone in." He spies a scythe scrawled in blood on the wall. The boys return to police headquarters to brief Renard, who announces that the case will be handed over to a pair of visiting FBI agents. Nick isn't happy.
Renard then visits Kimura in jail, explaining that he will booked for homicide and transferred to a maximum security prison where he will await a death sentence. "I've seen the tattoos on your back, I know who you are ... Too bad you didn't know who I am," Renard says. Kimura explains that he would've taken the coins -- if only there hadn't been two Grimms. That stops Renard. Nick, in the meantime, takes his mother to Aunt Marie's trailer housing a collection of relics and weapons. She explains that she found out she was a Grimm when she was only 10 years old, and used some of the trailer's books for research. "I never wanted this for you," Kelly says. (Well, too late for that.) Nick then reaches into a truck and removes the coins. Mom says they must be returned to the island where they were forged. "It's the only way to destroy them."
Nick and Kelly then say goodbye with a hug. But before mom leaves again, Nick shows her photos from the cargo ship crime scene. "I don't think it's reapers," he says. Mom doesn't either. She pulls a book off the shelf and shows Nick a picture of a leopard-looking creature with huge teeth. "These are worse than reapers," mom says. So bad, in fact, that she tells Nick to re-hide the coins. She is sticking around a little longer. "I need to see the bodies," Kelly says. So she does -- and quickly determines that it is the vicious, cat-like creature.
Later, Rosalee works in her shop when she is approached by a blonde Hexenbiest demanding the very same ingredients needed for the potion to wake up Juliette. Unbeknownst to Rosalee, the woman has been sent by Renard with orders to make sure Juliette recovers -- so that Nick won't be tempted to leave town as well as the watchful eye of Renard. The Hexenbiest leaves her phone number, which Nick quickly uses to find the woman's address. Nick goes to her home and IDs the woman as Adalind's mother. He demands to know where her daughter might be. "If Juliette dies, you die," Nick warns. He then returns to his own mother and explains that Aunt Marie left behind a key.
Mom explains that this is a very important key -- one of seven that, when combined, act as a map to a force that can control the word. The royal families are obviously looking for the keys ... and know Nick has one. But how? Kelly suggests that Nick talk to Kimura. He might be able to make the connection. Kimura, however, is busy hacking and choking after eating a sandwich delivered by an unseen prison guard. The prisoner has been poisoned. Nick tells Kelly that Kimura is dead. The FBI agents then get an anonymous call identifying the location of the cargo ship killer. They show up at the location -- and are immediately attacked by the killer, who speaks with a French accent when he isn't growing enormous teeth. Nick then gets a call. A wounded FBI agent explains that the killer is demanding to see Nick. So Nick and Kelly drive to the scene, an old lumber mill.
Nick enters with gun drawn while Kelly remains outside. Of course, Nick discovers both FBI agents mauled and dead. Rosalee and Monroe call, explaining that the potion to help Juliette is done but that there is only a 45 minute window to use it. It is important who administers the potion. They urge Nick to meet them at the hospital. Of course, Nick is a little busy. He hangs up, looks up, and finds the cat creature emerging from the darkness -- teeth barred. TO BE CONTINUED ...
