Vignesh Shivan loses cool over remark that Suriya’s ‘Tsk’ was not a hit

KollywoodA film industry tracker tweeted that there were no hits in the month of January, which caused the ‘Tsk’ director to react angrily.Digital NativeWhen a film industry tracker tweeted that there were no hits in the month of January, he might not have realised that it would cause a big stir among film personalities, particularly Vignesh Shivan, the director of the Suriya starrer, Thaana Serntha Kootam. With 'No Hits' for the trade in Jan, Tamil cinema would be looking at a much much better Feb. Hope the Hit meter is kickstarted — Kaushik Lm (@LMKMovieManiac) February 1, 2018 Reacting to the tweet, the director posted a series of tweets ranting about how industry trackers have turned out to be a bane to the film industry. In the tweets, he posted: “A film’s number game is only a producer’s thing! Audience r here to enjoy,It’s all jus entertainment! Gone r the days whn we used to enjoy every film! Madras High Court seeks translation of ‘Sodakku’ song from Suriya’s ‘Tsk’

KollywoodAccording to the petitioner, an Aiadmk party worker, the lines from the song portrayed politicians in a bad light and are defamatory.Digital NativeThe Madras High Court has sought the translation of verses in the Sodakku song in the Suriya starrer Thaana Serntha Kootam. It may be recalled that a case was filed by P Sathish Kumar, an Aiadmk party worker and secretary of the party’s women’s wing, seeking a ban on the song as it contained the lyrics Adhigara thimira veratty veratty velukka thonuthu. According to the petitioner, the lines portrayed politicians in a bad light and are defamatory. He added in his petition that the lyrics seem to have been made out with the intention of instigating violence and hence needs to be banned. The petitioner claims that the lines should be removed from the song as it will create law and order problems in the form of protests against politicians. His complaint to the police on the matter allegedly yielded no result forcing him to go to court. The public interest litigation that he had filed came up for hearing and the judges hearing the case ordered a translated copy of the lyrics to be submitted and posted the hearing to a later date. The film has collected Rs 90 crore during its 10-day run at the box office worldwide. In Tamil Nadu alone, it has collected Rs 42.3 crore, report sources. While the film had grossed Rs 67.50 crore in India, the overseas collections stood at Rs 22.50 crore. Directed by Vignesh Shivan of Poda Podee and Naanum Rowdy Thaan fame, the film stars Suriya and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles. Produced by Ke Gnanavel Raja under his banner Studio Green, the film was also released in Telugu under the title Gang. The star cast also includes Karthik, Ramya Krishnan and Rj Balaji in important roles. Anirudh Ravichander has composed music for this entertainer with Dinesh Krishnan cranking the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing it. Released on January 12 worldwide, Thaana Serntha Kootam is based on the Hindi movie Special 26 by Neeraj Pandey, starring Akshay Kumar and Kajal Agarwal in the lead roles. The film was inspired by a real-life incident that happened in Chennai in the 1980s, when a group of robbers posing as Cbi sleuths raided a jewellery showroom and looted the shop in broad daylight. Well, we need to wait and watch what the court’s verdict on the lyrics is going to be! Content provided by Digital Native.

The craft of acting can be taught: Manoj Bajpayee

FilmThe National Award-winning actor also believes that art of acting needs relentless passion from the learner.IANSBy Arundhuti Banerjee Can acting be taught or does it come from the experiences of life? Manoj, whose application to the National School of Drama (Nsd) was rejected multiple times, told Ians: "I think the craft of acting can be taught. Yes, there's a lot we embrace from the experience of life and to a certain point, there is an inborn talent. But acting is a mix of talent and craft. "I know many average actors, who learnt the craft rightly and with the years of practice, they have managed to find their way. That is why we go to some of the great institutes in our country like Nsd and Film and Television Institute of India. Some of the greatest personalities of the craft visit there to teach youngsters about acting. "Having said that, I believe one can only teach you the art of acting if you are passionate about it... This art form comes from passion." In Aiyaary, Manoj shares the frame with young actor Sidharth Malhotra. He is impressed by Sidharth's interest in learning. "I love to share my experience with youngsters, especially with those who have an interest to learn the craft. I have been conducting acting workshops from the age of 26 when I learn it from Barry John. When Sidharth called me and showed his interest to know more about the craft of acting, I was more than happy to share. "While shooting, I do not try to correct anybody because that is the director's area. But off the set, if a youngster like Sidharth is willing to learn, for me, sharing becomes all the more enjoyable," Manoj said. Giving a glimpse into the story of Aiyaary, he said: "The story revolves around a mentor and protegee and the ideology between two different generations. The journey of these two characters that I and Sidharth are playing is the life of the story. "Yes, there are some look changes in the film which comes in some of the crucial parts of the film, but moreover, the story is very interesting. It is not about soldiers fighting for the country on the border, but within the country." In the past, Manoj has worked with director Neeraj Pandey in films like Special 26, Saat Uchakkey and Naam Shabana. So how has their relationship evolved? "I think my bonding has evolved with Neeraj film to film. Off the set, we meet many times and talk a lot about sharing ideas and opinions. We are on the same wavelength intellectually and as creative people," Manoj replied. Starting his career in 1994, Manoj has struggled through his life and most of his content-driven films were not well-promoted. Now that he has opened up with the media and indulges in promotional activities, how does he find the change? "Well, it is something that needs to be done and to an extent all, we actors are happily doing it. There are some conversations with our media friends that I find interesting. At times, it is not exactly boring, but yes a little monotonous. But I think promoting a film is a good thing. "Earlier in my life, when I started acting in films, there was a constant struggle to get visibility of those films. Now it has changed," he said with a smile. "Now, every film finds its audience. Therefore, it is a great time for actors. There are so many opportunities and one has to be fit-and-fine to do justice to the performances. When I am staying fit, it does not mean building up the body, but being mentally and spiritually fit enough to act. Mental health matters a lot when you are performing, because you are emoting emotions," he shared. Aiyaary is releasing on February 9.

Suriya’s ‘Thaana Serntha Kootam’ all set to join Rs 100 cr club

KollywoodPromoted as a perfect festival film that the entire family can watch in the theatre, the movie stars Keerthy Suresh as the female lead.Digital NativeThe Suriya starrer Thaana Serntha Kootam, which was a Pongal release this year, is racing towards the Rs 100 crore club. According to trade reports, the film has collected Rs 90 crore during its 10-day run at the box office worldwide. In Tamil Nadu alone, it has collected Rs 42.3 crore, report sources. While the film grossed Rs 67.50 crore in India, the collections stood at Rs 22.50 crore from overseas. With positive word of mouth spreading about the film, the collections are expected to go up further. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the film stars Suriya and Keerthy Suresh as the lead pair. Karthik, Rj Balaji and Baahubali star Ramya Krishnan also play important roles in the movie. Others in the star cast include Senthil, Nandha, Suresh Chandra Menon, Sivasankar, Sathyan, and Vinodhini Vaidyanathan. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the soundtrack and Bgm for this heist film with Dinesh Krishnan cranking the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing it. Produced by Ke Gnanavel Raja under his banner Studio Green, the film is based on the Bollywood hit movie Special 26, which had Akshay Kumar in the lead role. Thaana Serntha Kootam was released in Telugu as well under the title Gang and is doing well in Andhra and Telangana regions. Interestingly, Suriya dubbed in Telugu for the first time in his career. While the film is doing well at the theatres, it may be mentioned here that its pre-release business shattered some earlier records. Promoted as a perfect festival film that the entire family can watch in the theatre, the film’s collection at the box office proves just that. The film was appreciated by the Censor Board officials for not including any smoking or drinking scenes, Suriya said prior to its release. Suriya is gearing up for his next with director Selvaraghavan; the film was launched recently and the team is set to kick off the shooting from February. Meanwhile, he will join hands with filmmaker Kv Anand for the third time later this year. This film will go on the floors after he wraps up the yet-untitled Selvaraghavan project. Anand and Suriya have previously worked together in Ayan and Maattraan. Without divulging much information about the project, Suriya said he’s kicked about joining hands with Anand, whose last directorial was Kavan. Content provided by Digital Native.

'Anirudh got very tensed when I said that...'

Thaanaa Serndha Koottam's success meet happened this evening, which was a colourful event.

During his speech, director Vignesh Shivn said, "A big thanks, first of all, for the audience to accept the film. Suriya sir gave his 100 percent for this script, and he whole-heartedly traveled along the film. His positive outlook on the film has been appreciated and well received by fans and the audience.

Anirudh got very tensed when I went and told him that this film will be a remake of Special 26. He was tensed since the original version didn't have any songs at all....

‘Thaana Serndha Koottam’ review: Suriya does justice to this bold heist film

KollywoodFor Suriya, who plays the role of an educated man who wishes to join the Cbi, this movie comes after several poorly received films.Priyanka ThirumurthyLet me start off by declaring that I haven’t watched Special 26, the Akshay Kumar starrer which has been remade into Vignesh Shivan’s latest film Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (Tsk). So, this review is not coloured by comparisons to the Hindi blockbuster. Tsk is a bold heist movie, a concept that has not often been brought to the big screen in Tamil cinema. For Suriya, who plays the hero, this movie comes after several poorly received films. So, to say that it was refreshing to see him comfortable in the role of a young man disillusioned by systemic corruption, is an understatement. The movie is set in 1987 and Suriya plays the role of an educated man who wishes to join the Cbi. He wants to conduct raids and expose corrupt politicians, businessmen, and clean up the system. But Uthaman, a corrupt Cbi officer played by Suresh Menon, acts as a hurdle to this dream and further insults Suriya for having lofty aspirations when he is just the son of a clerk. The hero, who is from a humble background, sees that his friends too are unable to join various government departments due to their lack of resources to pay officials bribes. Enraged by this, he brings together a group of con artists who decide to perform raids by pretending to be Cbi and Income Tax (It) officials. This is where the fun begins. The sequence where the ‘officials’ led by Ramya Krishnan raid a minister’s house is effortlessly funny. Comedians, including Senthil and Sathyan, add to the hilarity with their timing. Ramya Krishnan shines in the role given to her and the director allows the audience a peek into her character’s life, explaining the reason she took up the con job. The other actors, however, provide little or no reason for their need to cheat people for a living. Suriya, who is not new to playing the role of a government authority, is convincing and at his stoic best. The movie shifts from Chennai to rural Tamil Nadu and even Hyderabad as the actual Cbi begin to tail the con group. Yesteryear actor Karthik plays an upright official roped in to catch the gang and it is a match of wit against wit. The climax of the film provides a line of thought that remains problematic in terms of solving the inherent corruption in the system. Clues are given through the movie about the hero’s solution to the problem, but I can’t help but think that it would only lead to further disaster. While Anirudh Ravichander’s background music adds the much required flavour to the film, the sheer number of songs in the first half is a put off. It slows down a screenplay that could have kept you at the edge of your seat to the occasional raising of an eyebrow. The time spent making the characters dance would have been put to better use if their histories and reasons for choosing such a path was explained. You can’t really empathise with anyone but Suriya throughout the film. A special mention must be given to the art direction. Karaikal and Pollachi have both been picturised beautifully, and it looks like a constant carnival. Effort has been made to ensure the vehicles, buildings and electronics shown in the film represent the 80s. The fight sequences have also been choreographed very carefully. And yes, there is a heroine (Keerthi Suresh) but perhaps the film would have been much racier without yet another distraction from the actual plot. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

Thaanaa Serndha Koottam Movie Review

“Indha idam, inga irukka azhukku, indha azhukka uruvakki intha akukkulaye oori pona, idho ivanunga maari aalunga, ivanungalellam paathale, veratti vetatti velukka thonuthu,” this dialogue of Suriya’s that comes in ‘Sodakku’ song sums up the concept of Thaanaa Serndha Koottam.

Whenever regional filmmakers decide to make a heist film with a bunch of big star cast, our imagination directly goes to the renowned Ocean’s series. Tsk has a core plot that is pretty similar to the Hindi film Special 26. It must be noted that they have acquired the rights to the Hindi film and Vignesh ShivN has...

Roadblock for 'Gang', Telugu version of Suriya's 'Tsk'

TollywoodStaar Movies has alleged that they own the Telugu remake rights of 'Special 26'.Tnm StaffEven as Suriya’s Thaana Serntha Kootam is all set for a Pongal release, the petition on the Telugu version Gang, will be heard tomorrow by the Madras High Court. The movie, directed by Vignesh Sivn, is a heist film produced by Gnanavel Raja. The film is a remake of Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26. The case has been filed by Staar Movies, claiming that due permission was not taken for the film’s Telugu release. Staar Movies is owned by actor Thiagarajan who, in 2014, announced that he had bought the remake rights of the film Special 26 from Viacom. However, it was widely reported in 2016 that the remake rights had been sold to Gnanavel Raja for a film in which Suriya would play the lead. In late 2017, Staar Movies sought an interim stay on the release of the film since they allegedly still owned the remake rights. Staar Movies claimed that they had only sold the Tamil remake rights to Rpp Film Factory on the condition that a film be made within a year. The judgement in the case is expected on Wednesday. Suriya’s Thaana Serntha Kootam (Tsk) is all set for a massive release on January 12 worldwide and the team is busy promoting it in all centres. Speaking about his upcoming film during its promo event held recently, Suriya had said that Tsk is made for the festive season and one can watch it with the entire family. He added that Tsk will not have any social messages and is a clean entertainer made with the sole aim of letting the audiences have a relaxed and enjoyable time at the theatres.

'Tsk' Vs 'Sketch': Which of the five Pongal releases will win the race?

KollywoodThe big clash will be between Suriya and Vikram releases but there are other players, too.Tnm StaffThe Pongal weekend is a much coveted release date for Tamil films. The long holiday and the accompanying festivities usually ensure good footfalls in cinema theatres in the state. Being the first festival of the year, the box-office tends to be rather crowded. 2018 is no different - in fact, this year, as many as five films are all set to hit the screens. A few weeks ago, the number was as high as eight but three filmmakers have backed out of the race sensibly. Vishal and Arjun's Irumbuthirai is among the films which have postponed the release date. The biggest clash will be between Suriya's Thaana Serndha Koottam and Vikram's Sketch. The others in the race include Prabhu Deva's Gulebagavali, Aravind Swamy's Bhaskar Oru Rascal and Vijaykanth's son, Shanmugapandian's Madura Veeran. Writing for Firstpost, film critic and trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai says Tamil Nadu has 1,100 screens, of which only 800-900 are equipped to screen new films. Most of the screens, he says, will go to Suriya and Vikram films. Tsk Suriya's Thaana Serndha Koottam is the Tamil remake of Akshay Kumar's Special 26 which released in 2013. The film starred Kajal Aggarwal, Manoj Bajpayee, and Anupam Kher. Tsk has a good buzz around it and was even the golden tweet of the year till the Virushka wedding took away the honour. Directed by Vignesh Shivn, the film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Karthik and Ramya Krishna. Special 26 had enough comedy and intrigue built into the story. If Tsk is a faithful remake, chances are that it will hook the family audience. The original was a big hit and is a tried and tested storyline. The Tamil audience has increasingly opened up to thrillers with strong storytelling and the film is likely to score big if it has been done well. Sketch Directed by Vijay Chander, this Vikram-Tamannaah starrer is among the most anticipated releases of this year. From the teaser, it appears that Vikram is playing a rowdy in the film, a character he played to huge reception in Gemini. The film is also releasing big in Kerala, the distribution rights having been acquired by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments, which is co-owned by veteran producer Antony Perumbavoor. Vikram hasn't had a release in 2017. His last film was Irumugan and the break from the big screen has made his fans all the more eager to watch Sketch. The film is likely to give Tsk tough competition at the box-office if it receives good reviews. Gulebaghavali This Prabhudeva-Hansika film, directed by Kalyaan may prove to be a winner at the box office, considering it's a comedy which is likely to attract family audiences during the Pongal festival. The film has been produced by Kjr Studios which created a sensation with Gopi Nainar's Aramm towards the end of 2017. The film also stars Revathi, Ramdoss, and Yogi Babu. Prabhudeva is known for comedy films like Kaathala Kaathala and the actor still has a wide fanbase. If Gulebaghavali is the laugh riot its makers have been promising, it may end up getting more screens - provided, it holds up against the two big releases in its opening weekend. Bhaskar Oru Rascal The Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Bhaskar the Rascal, this film directed by Siddique stars Aravind Swamy and Amala Paul. The original starred Mammootty and Nayanthara in lead roles. Aravind Swamy is known for his intelligent script selection. The original film was a blockbuster which ran for 100 days in Kerala. The film is about a greedy businessman. Nayanthara played a single parent in the Malayalam film and Amala Paul is likely to reprise the role. Bhaskar Oru Rascal has a good buzz around it and the filmmakers have taken a risk, releasing it with Tsk and Sketch. Whether the gamble will pay off is another question. However, both Aravind Swamy and Amala Paul are strong performers and the film may stay ahead in the race, if it gets enough good word of mouth. Madura Veeran The directorial debut of cinematographer PG Muthiah, this film has Shanmugapandian in the lead role. Samuthirakani is also part of the cast. It remains to be seen how many screens this film, which does not have big stars in the cast, will manage to get. The film's trailer was launched by actor Sivakarthikeyan on January 1 and it managed to get eyeballs on social media. However, there isn't much buzz around it otherwise.

After being on the floors for nearly a year, the film is scheduled for a Pongal. Music for the film has been scored by Anirudh Ravichander and it is bankrolled by Studio Green production banner, on a budget of Rs. 90 crores.

In a first, Suriya dubs in Telugu for ‘Thaana Serntha Kootam’

EntertainmentApparently, Suriya spent over a week to dub in Telugu where he usually takes a day or two to dub in Tamil.Digital NativeDigital NativeAmong popular Tamil stars, Suriya enjoys a strong fan base in Andhra and Telangana and it’s a well-known fact. The success of some of his dubbed Tamil films in Telugu states has been proof of his fast-growing popularity. Keeping in mind his increasing fan base, Suriya has finally taken the effort to dub on his own for Gang - the Telugu dubbed version of his next release, Thaana Serntha Kootam, slated to hit the screens for Pongal. Apparently, Suriya spent over a week to dub in Telugu where he usually takes a day or two to dub in Tamil. He was hell-bent on getting his Telugu diction right, according to a source, and therefore didn’t mind spending more time to dub. Although Suriya has dubbed briefly for Maattrraan; this is his maiden attempt at full-length dubbing in Telugu. The makers of Thaana Serntha Kootam, rumoured to be the remake of Special 26, have confirmed the film will hit the screens on January 12. On Tuesday, the Tamil version was cleared with U/A certificate and the Telugu version is expected to go to censors this week. In the film, Suriya will be seen sporting two different looks and he will be seen trying his hands at full-length comedy after a long time. Produced by Studio Green, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander. Having been completely relieved of the project, Suriya is expected to commence work on Selvaraghavan’s project later this month. It’ll be his first collaboration with the Pudhupettai filmmaker and the yet-untitled film will be bankrolled by Dream Warrior Pictures. Sai Pallavi has been signed on to play the leading lady. It is believed that Suriya will sport a new look for the project which will be made on a lavish budget. There are also inside reports that Selvaraghavan is reviving Kaan, which he had launched earlier with Simbu, with Suriya in the titular role.
