Steve Burton Leaving General Hospital, Joining James Franco’s New Telenovela

29 August 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

General Hospital is losing one of its longest-running and most important characters: Steve Burton, who has played Jason Morgan since 1991, will tape his last episode in September, he tells TV Guide. Duhn-duhn-duuuuhn. "I have no complaints, no negative feelings at all," he says, "but it's time to go." Burton's exit comes not long after Gh's long-time executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was pushed out, and it looks like the two of them, plus James Franco, are working on a new show together. According to Burton, Franco had so much fun working on Phelps's Hollywood Heights that he "want[ed] to make one of his own novellas." Such is Franco! "Jill will Ep it, I'll produce and star in it and so will James," Burton says. Take comfort, Port Charles residents. »

James Franco Directing Art Project About James Franco & Lindsay Lohan; 'As I Lay Dying' Starts Casting

17 August 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Who are you, James Franco? In his never-ending quest to defy convention, Franco recently picked up a role in actioner "Homefront," written by Sylvester Stallone and starring Jason Statham, returned to TV for four episodes of "Hollywood Heights," and will cameo later this year in "Lovelace" as Hugh Hefner, as well as appear in the seemingly-shot-in-a-weekend thriller "The Letter." With starring roles in Sam Raimi's "Oz: The Great and Powerful" and Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" set for 2013, what's next for Franco? How about teaming up with Lindsay Lohan (sort of) for a film about themselves while also directing an adaptation of William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying?" Ok, so while many wouldn't associate Franco and Lohan together, the pair have apparently known each other since 2006, when they cameo'd together in Nancy Meyers' "The Holiday." Langford on Soaps: Who's Coming Out on "The Young and the Restless?"

Langford’S Picks And Pans

The L.A. Complex

It’s no secret that I am tired of coming out stories, but I am really enjoying Kal’s struggle with his sexuality. Maybe because even though it’s riddled with the usual clichés, it’s somewhat different in that it’s being told with a person of color This is a definite rarity and we’re getting a glimpse into the world of rap and how that plays into Kal’s hatred over his sexuality. It helps that Andra Fuller is doing a wonderful job in the role.

I loved his initial scene with the doctor where he saw to it that he didn’t have to leave the hospital and face the world again by confessing his continued suicidal thoughts, but I was disappointed that we didn’t get more interaction with Kal, his doctor and the other people in the hospital. »

See James Franco on Nick at Nite’s Telenovela

2 July 2012 10:30 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Nick at Nite's teen soap Hollywood Heights airs every weeknight, telenovela-style. The show, about a pop star and his No. 1 fan, dragged in its first nine episodes — might a songwriting contest unite these two? — but then Friday's installment gave us the gift we've been waiting for: James Franco! Heights makes the late, lamented Instant Star look like a densely plotted masterpiece, but Franco as a Xanadu fan earns the show a pass for at least a few more episodes. »

James Franco to return to soaps in 'Hollywood Heights' on June 29

11 June 2012 9:32 AM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

James Franco’s guest stint — or metaphysical investigation into the hall-of-mirrors recursion of celebrity, take your pick — on General Hospital was one of the few times in recent history that daytime television broke out into mainstream discussion, and it’s hard to argue that the spotlight wasn’t a boon for the genre.

Soap operas, like regular operas and (thanks to John Carter) space operas, aren’t doing so well these days. Dwindling down one by one thanks to network attrition, some of these cancelled shows had been on the air long enough to almost qualify for Aarp membership. So »
