Martin Sheen has received the most votes of the 40 Los Angeles candidates seeking election to the SAG-aftra national board, winning a four-year term with 5,803 votes.

Sheen, whose most famous role was as the U.S. President on “The West Wing,” was one of 15 winners announced Thursday night as union members opted for high-profile names. They also re-elected presidential candidates Esai Morales with 5,705 votes and Gabrielle Carteris with 4,567 to four-year terms.

A quartet of new high-profile candidates — Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Modine, Abigail Spencer, and Regina King — were also among the winners. King, who has won two Emmys for “American Crime,” received the third-highest vote total with 5,153.

Most of the attention has been on the presidential race with current president Carteris being re-elected as head of the Unite for Strength ticket over a challenge from Membership First’s Morales. King and Spencer are part of Unite for Strength while Modine and Thomas »

SAG-aftra Election Ending Bitterly With 2000 Strike Still in Dispute

22 August 2017 5:35 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Voting is ending for a particularly acrimonious SAG-aftra presidential election with results due to be announced as early as Thursday afternoon.

The counting of the ballots, with about a quarter of the 144,000 dues-current members expected to vote, will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The contest has featured accusations of election fraud and bungling the recent contract negotiations (made by Esai Morales and Membership First); negligence on safety issues and allowing massive staff salaries (made by independent stuntman Pete Antico); and Membership First’s alleged incompetence in the 2008 negotiations and its long opposition to the SAG-aftra merger (made by the Unite for Strength faction headed by current president Gabrielle Carteris).

The divisions within SAG-aftra run deep and have existed for the past two decades. Remarkably, the two main factions — the moderate-leaning Unite for Strength and the self-styled progressives of Membership First — have managed to revive the debate over the six-month commercials strike in 2000. Douglas Hansen Named Independent Overseer at Scandal-Plagued Red Granite

12 July 2017 2:03 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Veteran producer Douglas Hansen has been appointed to oversee financial affairs at Red Granite Pictures, as the company seeks to disentangle itself from a massive corruption case.

Hansen, former president and COO of Endgame Entertainment, will be tasked with inspecting the company’s books, monitoring transactions, and supporting the post-production and distribution of Red Granite’s next release, “Papillon.”

The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that Red Granite used funds stolen from a Malaysian development fund to produce “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Daddy’s Home,” and “Dumb and Dumber To.” The government has been seeking to seize Red Granite’s portion of the proceeds of the films as one part of a much broader, multibillion-dollar effort to recover funds on behalf of the Malaysian people.

Red Granite has been seeking to settle the case, and hopes that Hansen’s appointment will speed that process along.

“As ongoing, productive settlement discussions continue, Red »

A Brief History of Casting Talent Over Resemblance for Biopics

7 April 2017 3:17 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

How important is resemblance, really?

As we mentioned in our newsletter yesterday, Christian Bale is reportedly in talks to star as former vice president Dick Cheney in an Adam McKay helmed biopic, alongside Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney and Steve Carrell as Donald Rumsfeld. The news, broken by Variety, has lead to a host of reactions across the internet, including a number of Dark Knight and American Psycho related jokes because, you know, duh. Front and center in many of these reactions is speculation (though in some cases, anticipatory salivation might be more accurate) over how Bale will transform for the role.

After all, Christian Bale is known for physical metamorphoses that rank just below those of caterpillars on an impressiveness scale; he famously lost 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist (bringing the 6' actor to a skeletal 120-ish pounds), and afterwards went directly to Batman Begins, eating and weight-lifting his way to 220 pounds, which »
