It’s been getting rather positive reviews (read ours here), and now the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton has become another big money-winner for Universal, who are already having a great year.

Made on a reported budget of just $28 million, Straight Outta Compton went straight to the number one spot with a whopping $56.1 million domestic box office. This would make it the sixth biggest August opening, knocking off Rise of the Planet of the Apes from 2011.

Along with Jurassic World making it to $1.6 billion and with Furious 7 passing the $1 billion mark and Minions not far behind, it has been a great year for Universal.

Extended featurette for Straight Outta Compton

7 August 2015 4:14 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The much anticipated biopic of one of hip-hop’s most notorious and influential groups will hit the big screen next weekend in the Us – and two weeks later in the UK – and we have a new extended featurette courtesy of Noisey.

Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) and tells the rise to fame of the N.W.A during their short but impressive tenure from 1986-1991.

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth »

Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray wants to direct Black Panther

3 August 2015 8:39 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

There had been some rumours floating around that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray could be next in line to helm Black Panther now that Ava DuVernary has stepped aside.

In an interview to promote the N.W.A biopic, Grey was asked about these rumours, which he dismissed, but noted that it would be something that he’s interested in.

“I would love to direct a superhero movie,” he told BlackTree TV. “We’ll see what happens. If [the rumours are] right, I’m there!”

Ironically enough, F. Gary Gray turned down the chance to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier so he could go off and make Straight Outta Compton, and its that movie that has now put him back on Marvel’s radar.
