This is Our Design #17: “Oeuf”

26 August 2014 7:44 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

We are back! Who are we? What are we back to? Who the heck knows!? But look at this fancy new post that isn’t at all disturbing!

NBC might not have aired it, but we here at This is Our Design were never going to pass up on the chance to talk about “Oeuf,” Hannibal‘s most notorious episode. Co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick are joined by David Bax of Battleship Pretension and Hey, Watch This! to break down the episode (and…break…some…eggs!? (it’s a pun on the title (only now do we realize breaking and cracking something are two different processes))). Discussion centers heavily around ideas of family as we lead into some of our best editions of the recurring segments yet: “Kate’s Classical Corner,” “The Devil in the Details,” and “Spoiled Meat,” which has much to do with kitchenware. Have a listen »

Last weekend at Comic-Con, we joined a small group of journalists for an interview session with the main cast and executive producer of Supernatural. Stars Jared Padalecki (Sam), Jensen Ackles (Dean), Misha Collins (Castiel), and Executive Producer Jeremy Carver provided details on some of Season 9′s big moments and teased what we can expect from Season 10.

Executive Producer Jeremy Carver:

It seems like there are some excellent storytelling opportunities with the introduction of the Men of Letters Bunker. Do you plan on having a continued focus on that in Season 10?

When we introduced the Men of Letters, not just as a location, but one of the final pieces or the Winchester Family Tree, it opened up for the writers and enormous trove of possibilities. Yes, we’re always coming up with fantastic ways of looking at the Men of Letters and it’s become such a part of the »

Is 'True Detective' worthy? 'Modern Family,' again? The critics react to 2014's Emmy nods

10 July 2014 4:18 PM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent - Inside TV news »

Melissa Maerz: Jeff,

When the Emmy nominations were announced this morning, I was sitting at my desk, shouting, “Hodor! Hodor! Hodor!” Game of Thrones dominated with 19 nominations! Hot pie for everyone! I’d quibble with the fact that Noah Hawley’s fantastic update of Fargo didn’t get a best drama nod, especially since it was the runner-up with 18 nominations, and The Good Wife was unjustly ignored in that category, coming off its best season ever—it might be the only network drama that I truly loved—but the rest of the list was pretty solid. Among the smartest choices »

Starz orders 'The Girlfriend Experience' television series

23 June 2014 10:28 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Is "The Girlfriend Experience" about to become the new "Fargo"? Starz announced on Monday (June 23) that it has ordered a somewhat fascinating -- in concept, if Tbd in terms of execution -- 13-part anthology series based on Steven Soderbergh's 2009 indie. "The Girlfriend Experience," if you've somehow forgotten, featured adult actress Sasha Grey as a high-end Manhattan escort offering Gfe, Girlfriend Experiences meant to simulate the intimacies of actual marriages or relationships. A 2009 Sundance premiere, "The Girlfriend Experience" wouldn't immediately seem to be the most likely movie-to-tv transfer. It grossed under $700,000 at the domestic box office and reviews were more "curious" than positive/negative for the drama, which had a running time of under 80 minutes. "The Girlfriend Experience" is probably thought of among Soderbergh's digital experiments, projects like "Full Frontal" or "Bubble," rather than positioned among the Oscar and Emmy winner's bigger critical or popular successes. It appears that the »

We’ve Got Some Good News and Some Bad News About ‘Better Call Saul’

19 June 2014 8:50 PM, PDT | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

You might feel some apprehension about the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, but you know you’re going to watch it. When it finally arrives, that is. The show, which is to star Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as lawyer Saul Goodman, was supposed to debut on AMC this November. The bad news is that it’s been pushed back until early next year. The good news, though, is that the cable network is excited about what they’ve seen so far and have already renewed the series for a second season. The first will be 10 episodes, and the second, arriving early 2016, will add another 13. Vince Gilligan is directing the pilot and will share showrunning duties with Peter Gould, who created Goodman as a Breaking Bad writer in season 2 (the character’s debut episode was also called “Better Caul Saul”). Michael McKean, who was so great recently on HBO’s canceled Family Tree is also in »

If I Had An Emmy Ballot 2014: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

13 June 2014 8:59 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The Television Academy of Arts & Sciences released this year's Emmy ballots on Monday. Now that the ballots are out, it's time for our annual two-pronged experiment, in which Dan tries to predict the likeliest nominees in each major category, while I pretend that I'm an actually TV Academy member and pick the six nominees that would make me the happiest. We are, as always, playing by the Emmy rules, which means we can't argue for someone who didn't submit themselves (say, Alan Cumming for "The Good Wife"), can't move someone from lead to supporting or vice versa, and can't declare that "True Detective" is a miniseries and therefore clear more room in the drama categories. I'm also obviously limited by what I watched and what I haven't. I've only seen a couple of "Nurse Jackie" episodes so far this season, for instance, and the sample size wasn't enough for me »

It’ll be an absolute powerhouse rock-off between Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson tonight in the first part of American Idol’s season 13 finale (8 p.m. Et on Fox).

From the beginning of the competition, both finalists have been commended for their big performances and even bigger vocal power and range. Now that they are the last man and woman standing, you can expect the finale to be a “big, over-the-top rock ‘n roll extravaganza,” according to Johnson. But just how did a teenager from Michigan and a guy who auditioned two times already for the show make it to the finale? »

Michael McKean Joins Better Call Saul

1 May 2014 11:10 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Spending time on stage with the man who was Walter White was not nearly enough Breaking Bad-adjacent action for Michael McKean. He’s just signed on for a co-starring role in the show’s spin-off, Better Call Saul. The series, created and run by Bad boss Vince Gilligan and Saul creative parent Peter Gould, looks to follow the wise-cracking, money-grabbing lawyer as played by Bob Odenkirk. It’ll serve as a prequel, showing what he got up to before (and potentially during) the time that Walter White entered his life.McKean is apparently playing a character called Dr. Thurber, a formerly brilliant lawyer now troubled by a strange affliction. He’s joining Jonathan Banks, who will be breathing new life into grumpy fixer Mike Ehrmantraut in the show, which is scheduled to air in the Us from this November.Aside from theatre duties, where he’s appearing alongside Bryan Cranston in All The Way, »

The show, which is slated to hit the air in November, also features another Bad alum, Saul’s stone-faced Pi Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks).

Amazon Prime Makes Exclusive Multi-Year Deal to Stream HBO Classic Series

23 April 2014 10:10 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Amazon and Netflix are in an intense race for premium content. Now Inc. has nabbed HBO.  People have speculated about when and how HBO would make its wealth of programming available to consumers on a wider basis separate from its bundled arrangement with the cable companies. They charge consumers high prices for loads of monthly programming that is not premium in addition to high-priced Premium Channels such as HBO and Showtime. This is the first step. Of course, Amazon and HBO are starting out with older content that is no longer fresh.  For the first time, canceled classic HBO series including "The Sopranos," "Rome," "Six Feet Under," "The Wire," "Deadwood," "Big Love," "Eastbound & Down," "Family Tree," "Enlightened," "Treme," and "Oz" plus mini-series "Band of Brothers" and "John Adams" will be available to Amazon Prime subscribers via Amazon's content licensing agreement with HBO. Prime »

HBO, Amazon Prime team up to stream 'The Sopranos,' 'The Wire' & more

23 April 2014 7:43 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

For cord-cutters who aim to watch the best of television without a cable box (or, in some cases, even a television), HBO has long been the big missing piece of the puzzle. HBO has its own streaming video service, HBO Go, but you can only access it if you already have a cable subscription (or if you have a friend or relative with a subscription who will share their password with you). Cord-cutters ask all the time about the possibility of HBO Go being offered independently, but it would completely undermine HBO's very lucrative business model to do so, and it hasn't happened yet, and likely won't anytime soon. But today in a very big deal for the future of streaming TV — and for the ongoing war for streaming supremacy between Netflix and Amazon (a rare battlefield where Amazon is an underdog) — HBO and Amazon announced an agreement to, »

Girls, The Newsroom, and Veep will eventually make their way to Amazon, too. (The announcement does not mention two of HBO's notable series: Sex and the City and Game of Thrones. Hm.) HBO has entered into a multiyear pact with that makes the e-commerce company’s Prime Instant Video the exclusive online-based subscription VOD service to offer past seasons of the premium cabler’s originals like “The Sopranos” and “The Wire.”

That includes full seasons of “The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under,” “The Wire,” “Big Love,” “Deadwood,” “Eastbound & Down,” “Family Tree,” “Enlightened,” “Treme,” early seasons of “Boardwalk Empire” and “True Blood,” as well as miniseries like “Band of Brothers” and “John Adams.”
