Sandra Bullock The Heat: Bullock’s biggest opening weekend at domestic box office? (Photo: Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock in The Heat) Starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, Paul Feig’s buddy comedy The Heat opened with a remarkable — and better than initially expected — $39.11 million at 3,181 Us/Canada locations according to the June 28-30, 2013, weekend box-office figures found at Box Office Mojo. This weekend in North America, The Heat trailed only last weekend’s holdover, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University, which collected $45.6 million. (See also how White House Down does Channing Tatum no favors.”) A 20th Century Fox release reportedly budgeted at $41 million (not including marketing and distribution expenses, or contractual box-office-gross-sharing obligations), The Heat went above the $35 million I’d predicted on Saturday because that day’s estimates found at Deadline.com were lower than in reality. The Heat was up 5% on Saturday, even though Friday’s box-office take included late Thursday shows. »

This weekend, Channing Tatum's $150 million "White House Down" bombed in theaters. Meanwhile, the R-rated "The Heat" comedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, was a surprise hit by grossing $40 million in just three days on a budget of only $43 million. Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) has now revealed that 20th Century Fox is moving forward with a sequel. "We've got ['The Heat' screenwriter] Katie Dippold writing away on one," he confirmed. "We had an idea that we thought was really fun." Feig continued: "I just love these characters so much. I want to see them fighting more crime and having more fun." »

Kanye West has a fatherly glow, don't you think? The new dad made his first industry appearance last night since the birth of his baby girl North West on June 15, when the rapper attended Jamie Foxx's Bet Awards after party last night at the actor's home in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Yeezy, who looked a little sleepy (hey, Channing Tatum said taking care of a newborn was tiring), was dressed in his usual black attire. A source tells E! News that Kanye was seen entering with a couple of guys and headed straight to the VIP area where he was hanging out with Foxx, T.I. and Young Jeezy. He was seen talking with the White House Down star, who congratulated Kanye on his daughter. West »

A funny thing happened this week at the box office: Channing Tatum's new release, White House Down, was not at the top. It didn't even come in second - it was third, which is a big drop, considering that he had three blockbuster hits in 2012. What went wrong? We have a few ideas. Allow us to speculate on what, exactly, White House Down lacks. 1. Channing Tatum doesn't dance. 2. Channing Tatum doesn't get to make out with anyone. Get the rest of the reasons after the jump. »

Melissa McCarthy is the hottest name in comedy right now — even hotter than the boys.
With Fox’s “The Heat” scoring an impressive $39 million Stateside debut this weekend, the comedic actress proved she can not only compete in a mostly male-driven genre, she’s capable of dominating it.
“The Heat,” co-starring Sandra Bullock, easily won the weekend’s face-to-face standoff with Sony’s male duo actioner, “White House Down,” which disappointed with $24.9 million. But the comparisons for McCarthy to other comedies and their male stars go much deeper than this weekend’s direct B.O. showdown alone.
Looking at the first few breakout hits for such male stars including Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Jason Bateman, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, and it’s clear McCarthy is doing it better. The first two films in which she starred — “Bridesmaids,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination, and “The Identity Thief” — became hugely successful Stateside, »

Yes, folks, "White House Down" flopped at the box-office. Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx were no match for the star power of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy whose "The Heat" triumphed at No. 2 with a $40 million debut. "White House Down?" $25.7 million and with a reported budget of $150 million, it's a certifiable flop! Worst than "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer," and "The Hangover Part III."
So what happened? Well, first, there was a movie called "Olympus Has Fallen" that shared the same DNA as "White House Down." And actually, I found that movie better than the Tatum-Foxx collaboration. Why? Because it had a singular vision -- the terrorists are bad, but don't worry, Gerard Butler is here to save the day. Its simplicity is what saved the film.
"White House Down" has a lot of angles that people were not able to connect the dots. Is it about White House being attacked? »

Hugh Jackman describes his signature superhero persona as "a monster" in the latest look at "The Wolverine." White House Down became a mystifying flop this weekend, making just $25 million and watching The Heat run away with all its buddy cop buzz. But White House Down had two really charismatic stars and a bunch of crazy moments and flippin' Roland Emmerich behind it! What the hell happened? Katey and Sean-- who have already, full disclosure, declared their love for the movie in front of the actual White House-- try to figure it out below. Do we blame Olympus Has Fallen? The Heat? Is it all Channing Tatum's fault? Help us solve the mystery. Katey: Sean, we are both heartbroken today. It is a sad day for America. It is the day that we have to admit that our fellow Americans have failed us. Sean: And completely shocked us. By turning their backs on White House Down, audiences appear to have blasted a gaping hole in the middle »

The Heat grossed an impressive $40 million this weekend, putting it on track to be Melissa McCarthy's second hit comedy in the last six months. Sure, some of that had to do with co-lead Sandra Bullock, a genuine movie star. But Bullock was the straight woman; it was McCarthy who had to bear most of the comedic burden. This was also the case in Identity Thief, which got middling reviews yet did incredibly well, grossing $135 million domestically on the back of McCarthy's appeal. On a weekend when the fourth-place debut of Channing Tatum's White House Down dampened Hollywood's hopes that they had a new action star who could ensure surefire hits, McCarthy has emerged as comedy's new sure thing ... at least for now. But how long can it last? She's at a point where the decisions she makes over the next few years could either position her as »

Usually in movies you can threaten to endanger the lives of children or dogs, but never show either of them in anything close to resembling real peril. But White House Down, despite being a pretty lighthearted and massively entertaining action movie, really goes for it when it comes time for a little girl to stand up for herself-- and the life of the President-- to a terrorist who has a gun to her head. And the actress who's up to that massive challenge is Joey King, a 13-year-old who has been absolutely everywhere lately. You might recognize her as Ramona from Ramona and Beezus, as Steve Carell and Julianne Moore's young daughter in Crazy Stupid Love, as "older prison child" (a.k.a. young Talia Al Ghul) in The Dark Knight Rises) or as the voice of the China Girl in this year's Oz The Great And Powerful. Buddy action movies rise and fall on the chemistry shared between the leads. Audiences felt Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy had plenty, so The Heat became a weekend smash. The same ticket buyers didn’t buy into Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, so White House Down struggled. Ride Along shouldn’t have such problems. Pairing comedian Kevin Hart with tough guy Ice Cube for a buddy-cop comedy looks like a masterstroke, if the teaser trailer for Tim Story’s upcoming film is any indication. The set up is short, sweet and incredibly simple. Hart plays a security guard who’s trying to impress his girlfriend’s brother (Ice Cube). In order to prove himself, he agrees to go on a police-sanctioned Ride Along....

Another win for Monsters University. While many people were predicting The Heat would overthrow the film, Monsters managed to get the edge and stay number one. This time last year Ted was the number movie at the box-office and many thought history were to repeat itself. That wasn’t the case, however. White House Down’s only downfall was that it came last to Olympus Has Fallen. It didn’t do so well, placing fourth. »

I've updated the RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge leaderboard after processing the results from this weekend's box office where Monsters University dipped about 45% for its second weekend at #1 with $46.5 million. The Heat and White House Down both came in $900,000 under their Sunday estimates with The Heat bringing in $39.1 million and White House Down ending the weekend with a disappointing $24.8 million. The other film readers were predicting was the second weekend of World War Z, which ended up dropping 55% for a $29.7 million weekend. In other news, Man of Steel crossed the $500 million mark worldwide this weekend -- $248.7 million domestically, and $271.7 internationally -- making it the biggest June release ever. With a reported budget of $225 million this is good news for Warner Bros. as the film is only 17 days into its overall release. As for that leaderboard, here is the current top ten, but you can see the full list of rankings right »

There will be obvious comparisons made between White House Down and the identically plotted March release Olympus Has Fallen. Both films are essentially Die Hard in the White House. There are only so many ideas in Hollywood, so this type of thing has happened before. 2006 saw the release of two Truman Capote biopics within [...]

Sure, the easy thing to do would have been to compare White House Down with the other White House/president-under-attack movie that just came out three months ago known as Olympus Has Fallen. And by "easy" I mean that Jacob Hall already did it with his fantastic article "How Does 'White House Down' Compare to 'Olympus Has Fallen'?" He correctly pointed out that White House Down is a better flick. Let's consider that the first round, and thrust Down into the finals against the big boy. That's right, in this week's Film Face-off it's time for this "Die Hard at the White House" film to take on Die Hard. John and His Sidekick White House Down John Cale (Channing Tatum) is a Capitol...

"White House Down" was supposed to be one of the surefire hits of the summer.
Channing Tatum became a bona fide movie star last year with a sleeper hit trifecta of "The Vow," "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike" (not to mention being named People's Sexiest Man Alive). Jamie Foxx was coming off his biggest box office success to date with the Oscar nominated "Django Unchained." And director Roland Emmerich has experience both directing blockbuster hits ("2012," "The Day After Tomorrow") and destroying the White House in a patriotic summer movie sensation ("Independence Day").
But even with that pedigree and high profile pre-release hype dating all the way back to Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars ABC special (where Foxx and Tatum turned catchy/silly slow jam "Channing All Over Your Tatum" into a viral hit), "White House Down" shocked Hollywood with a embarrassingly limp $25.7 million estimated opening weekend.

It's up, up and away for Superman at the box-office.
After three weeks in theaters, "Man of Steel" has soared to a domestic total of $248.6 million, after landing in fifth place this past weekend with $20.8 million added to the pile. The Henry Cavill-starring superhero flick was just $5 million shy of beating "White House Down," Sony's action flick that debuted to a meager $25.7 million.
But that's not all: "Man of Steel" has stirred up $271.7 million in foreign grosses, bringing its worldwide tally to $520.3 million. That's a big result for the comic book icon, and a sure sign that fans want to take a look at the greater DC Cinematic Universe. Bring it on, WB!

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy brought The Heat against Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx at the box office.
The Fox action-comedy starring the funny ladies as mismatched detectives earned $40 million in second place in its opening weekend, topping the $25.7 million debut haul of Sony's White House Down, according to studio estimates.
The Disney-Pixar animated prequel Monsters University remained box-office valedictorian in its second weekend, earning $46.1 million in first place. »

White House Down's Maggie Gyllenhaal has touted her co-star Channing Tatum's sex appeal and Jamie Foxx's quick wit.
The Academy Award nominee quipped in a chat with Just Jared that Tatum is just as sexy in real life as he is in movies like Magic Mike.
"He's Channing Tatum, he's sexy, he's sweet, he's great," Gyllenhaal said, further commenting: "He's great to work with!"
The actress also praised fellow White House Down star Foxx, who plays the Us president in the terrorism-themed thriller.
"I don't know if I'm totally allowed to say this, but Jamie Foxx was my favourite! He's so great," she declared.
"[Jamie] made me laugh so hard that [director] Roland [Emmerich] had to come into the helicopter and say 'Stop making her laugh'. But I thought, 'Ok, this Secret Service agent loves the president'."
