Durban Showcases African Film Renewal

18 July 2013 9:50 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Opening on July 18, the Durban Intl. Film Festival now ranks as one of the longest running, biggest and fastest growing of major African film events and a burgeoning platform for business in South Africa and beyond.

Participant Media Finds Convenient Truth With ‘State 194,’ ‘Fifth Estate’

24 May 2013 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Participant Media, a key backer of touchstone documentaries such as “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Food,” Inc., isn’t afraid to take on divisive issues like government secrecy and the state of Palestine.

The 9-year-old company has just released Dan Setton’s “State 194,” a documentary about Salam Fayyad’s efforts to gain United Nations recognition for the independence of the Palestinian territories. And it’s in post on Bill’s Condon’s WikiLeaks drama “The Fifth Estate” (pictured above), due out Oct. 11 from Disney.

Both titles also are receiving Participant’s unique added-value component: a Web-based social action campaign aimed at sparking discussion and getting people involved with the issues represented in the movie. It’s a strategy exemplified in the company motto: “Entertainment that inspires social change.”

A third of the 150 or so employees at Participant’s Beverly Hills headquarters work on social action campaigns, reaching out to communities »

Teasing Apart Palestine's Effort to Become State 194

16 May 2013 9:00 PM, PDT | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

In April, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad resigned from office, five months after Palestine received non-member observer state status at the United Nations. The new documentary State 194 teases apart Fayyad's efforts to make Palestine the 194th member state of the U.N., and how those efforts were received in Palestine, Israel, and abroad. Filmmaker Dan Setton highlights the grinding political processes that halted the realization of a two-state solution and full recognition of Palestine. The best part of State 194 is its domesticity, its low-key approach to a conflict that has been widely sensationalized in the media. Fayyad is depicted not just as an international spokesperson for a peaceful struggle, but as a man whose wife criticizes him for not packing enough »
