Not your average thriller.
22 April 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

When I walked into this movie at the Tribeca Film Festival, I was not quite sure what to expect. When I walked out of this movie, I would not say I was "blown-away," but it really made me think a lot. This is not a fast-paced movie, nor is it that slow-paced either. It's a showcase for acting and writing. Garret Hedlund, Oscar Isaac, Walton Goggins, and even Mark Wahlberg shape the movie into what it is–especially Oscar Isaac–and the storytelling I can tell is full of metaphors and symbolic meanings. There are no action sequences, there are no clear love interests–there are these sort-of love interests tied to Garret Hedlund's character but that's a whole other thing to explain. There are however, plenty of shock-worthy moments, and unexpected turns along the way. However, don't be fooled that this is a serious movie. There are plenty of moments that are funny, particularly with Mark Wahlberg and Walton Goggins who do not have huge roles in the movie, but still stand out very well in the cast. But really, it's Oscar Isaac who brings most of the thrills, and the gasps, and the laughs, and for that he ultimately makes the whole movie. When it comes to the filmmaking aspects of it, the movie is very well shot and, as I said before, very well-written.

In terms of recommending this movie to anyone, I would say it would definitely be enjoyed by film-buffs. Bu mostly, the movie is for people looking for something different, and somewhat refreshing in comparison to every other thriller out there today. So overall, I would say it is worth seeing.
