Lakers legend Kobe Bryant was several minutes tardy for the panel on his upcoming Showtime documentary “Kobe Bryant's Muse” at the Television Critics Association on Friday, but he had a good excuse. “Sorry I'm late,” Bryant said as he finally took the stage. “I was out looking for a head coach.” Directed by Gotham Chopra (“Decoding Deepak”), the documentary counts Bryant as a producer, a detail that has the potential to affect the objectivity of the project. Asked about his dual role as producer and subject, Bryant admitted, “I think me as producer is only a title. Honestly, I'm not quite.

Gotham Chopra, the son of Deepak Chopra, spent a year following his father around the world in order to create his first documentary, Decoding Deepak. The film focuses on the strain put on this father-son relationship as Gotham attempts to rectify the two conflicting sides he sees in his father (the icon versus the real man). Filmed under the guise of being a project about Deepak’s initiation as an honorary Buddhist monk in Thailand, the film is really Gotham’s attempt to expose the flawed, human side of this international holy man who he sees every day....

Early in "Decoding Deepak," the titular spiritualist and his filmmaker son float languidly over Thailand's Chao Phraya river delta, on their way to the former's ordination as a Buddhist monk. "Don't try to make sense of it, just roll the cameras and try to keep up," the director sighs. Mission accomplished. Gotham Chopra's fitfully engaging new documentary travels between Bangkok, New York, and New Delhi, trying to find the "real" Deepak. Gotham's refreshing skepticism is admirable, especially because it is turned on his own father, and the portrait that emerges is less than flattering. Deepak, we find, is a spiritualist obsessed with the temporal, a prophet of mindfulness whose eyes flicker down to his phone with abandon, a supposedly enlightened figure whose quest for fame and "relevance," as Gotham puts it, remains "insatiable." As an exposé of sorts, "Decoding Deepak" works, to a...

Title: Decoding Deepak Director: Gotham Chopra A best-selling author, lifestyle coach and proponent of Eastern medicinal practices, Deepak Chopra is known to and beloved by millions. Of course, he’s also just a man — and a sometimes distant and curious one to his son, Gotham Chopra. “Decoding Deepak,” then, is a documentary devoted to unraveling a bit of the myth surrounding the public figure, as the younger Chopra follows his father for a year, chronicling his brokered ordainment as a Buddhist monk in Thailand (while not entirely successfully grappling with his Blackberry addiction) and subsequent book tour for a fictionalized autobiography of Muslim prophet Muhammad. Smart, warm-hearted and inquisitive, it [ Read More ]

The first few moments of the mercifully brief "Decoding Deepak" (it runs a scant 74 minutes) promise something intriguing. In the opening few scenes, the movie teases a look at Deepak Chopra, the spiritual advisor and self-help guru who has written something like sixty books and helped lead the rich and powerful towards existential oneness, not through some detached, analytical third-party lens, but from first-hand knowledge, since the filmmaker/narrator/co-star is Chopra's son, Gotham. Is Deepak a fraud, the genuine article, or something in between? If anyone could figure it out, it's his son and heir to ChopraCorp. Sadly, while it is entertaining in spots and certainly heartfelt, "Decoding Deepak" favors glazed-over generalities over any actual introspection. Tantalizingly, Gotham offers an abbreviated biography at the beginning of the film – Chopra was an MD who worked hard and partied hard and after nearly veering out of control, entered...

The last few days have seen the trailer debuts of some promising flicks arriving in theaters in the coming months, among the most notable being the Patton Oswalt comedy Nature Calls, Director David O. Russell's drama Silver Linings Playbook (starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence), the Deepak Chopra documentary Decoding Deepak, and Sylvester Stallone's 2013 action flick Bullet to the Head. Also in the mix are a few flying under the radar like Alamo Drafthouse's amazing gift to film geeks, Trailer War, Matthew Lillard's feature-length directorial debut Fat Kid Rules the World, and Price Check (with Parker Posey). It's an eclectic selection if not always a promising one.

Journalist and filmmaker Gotham Chopra spends a year traveling the world decoding his father Deepak Chopra, resolving the spiritual icon he is to the world vs. the real man known to his family. What starts as an intimate biopic becomes a deeper plunge into the meaning of identity itself. The film from writer-director-producer Gotham Chopra makes its premiere at SXSW on March 11th.
