One of the most FUN episodes of season 8

Warning: Spoilers
"The Pact" (8x2) is one of my 5 favorite episodes from season 8. It's not necessarily one of the best, just a personal favorite. But it is a good episode. I'm only gonna talk about the first half of the episode.

The story is about two female vigilante killers who are out for revenge. They met online in a support group. Darlene is out to get the guy who raped and murdered her 8 year old daughter. Ellen is out to get the woman who killed her baby nephew while driving drunk when she was 17. The woman especially got off easy, with her being a minor at the time. The woman is murdered in San Diego and 3 hours later, the man is murdered in Los Angeles. Both were killed in the same way: blitz attacked, chained to a car and dragged. They appear to have no relation to each other. The BAU quickly deduce that it was the work of two unsubs and that one unsub was more reluctant/hesitant and the other one seemed to enjoy what they were doing.

I'd like to acknowledge the casting. Kim Wayans (Darlene) and Meckenzie Phillips (Ellen) had a really good chemistry with each other as the vigilante duo. Kim Wayans made Darlene very sympathetic to the viewers. She seemed nice. She even killed her victim BEFORE the dragging, because she couldn't bring herself to drag them alive. Ellen is a possible psychopath who seemed like she actually liked the kill (and the suffering of her victim).

Darlene and Ellen swapped murders (like in Strangers on a Train). However, the fact that they met on the internet would probably mean the cops would eventually connect them as partners. But it seems they have plans to flee the country after they're done anyway. Ellen tells Darlene that before she killed one of her daughter's rapists, he gave up the name of two more guys who were involved.

The BAU identify both unsubs only halfway into the episode (which is pretty quick). But that's because the story takes a very interesting turn. These two female vigilantes eventually go toe to toe with a psychopath in the second half of the episode and it's quite a ride. The psychopath Jason Nelson is played brilliantly by Brandon Keener. And it's a second half that is way too good to give away. There are extended scenes with the ladies and the psychopath that's wonderfully written and acted.

Criminal Minds has done it's share of vigilante episodes over the years. My favorite is probably still "A Real Rain" (1x17) from season one. But there have been other good ones like "True Night" (3x10) and "The Road Home" (9x13).

One very underwhelming pact

Warning: Spoilers
With 'Criminal Minds', some seasons are better than others and every season has a mixture of outstanding, great, very good, good, average, mediocre and bad episodes. This said, lesser episodes of Seasons 1-4 (with possible exception of "Machismo") are better than the lesser episodes of Season 6 onward.

Of a very hit-and-miss Season 8 (almost as much as Seasons 6 and 9, though Season 11 is the worst season), my vote for the weakest episode is between "Magnificent Light" and this. "Through the Looking Glass", "The Replicator", "The Wheels on the Bus" and "Magnum Opus" are also mediocre at best (from personal opinion). Season 8 is not all bad, "The Lesson", "Restoration", "All That Remains" and "Broken" were great, and the likes of "The Fallen", "Alchemy", "God Complex" and "The Good Earth" were also very good.

"The Pact" has good things certainly, have yet to see a 'Criminal Minds' episode with no redeeming qualities, even low-point episodes like "200", "The Black Queen" and the worst of Season 11. Visually, the production values in "The Pact" are without complaint. It's very well shot and lit and is overall stylish, gritty, classy and atmospheric. The music is moody in the haunting and melancholic sense and fits well, without either enhancing or distracting from the atmosphere.

Acting from the regulars is good enough, with Joe Mantegna and Matthew Gray Gubler being particularly strong and Kirsten Vangsness is endearing. Generally the script disappoints, but there is a standout moment with Rossi's disgruntled-ness about vacations and making up all kinds of funny excuses for not going to the suggested places. Garcia has the odd mildly amusing line. Of the supporting cast, only Brandon Keener impresses as a particularly despicable character that got his just desserts, his change from meek to evil was too hasty but when he was evil it was truly bone-chilling to see someone with such a lack of remorse and actually be proud of what he did.

However, the story doesn't compel, let down by a lack of tension and suspense, two very overacted unsubs (particularly Kim Wayans) which takes away from the chills and sympathy factor, the unsubs being revealed too early and having too much screen-time and parts that border on the ridiculous (the soil sample part especially).

Regarding the team, they have little to do and are underused in screen-time. Profiling is little, and once again they resort to baseless conclusion jumping and too much reliance on Garcia to provide the answers. Only Rossi shines really. As for newcomer Blake, she is a little more tolerable than in the previous episode the season premiere "The Silencer", but she has a different problem this time in that she barely has a personality. The script is by the numbers and the direction is stylistically striking but dull in momentum.

In summary, very underwhelming. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Hate Rossi simply because of this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Words can't describe how much anger I had for Rossi after this episode.

Was once my favourite character and instantly became my least favourite character simply because of his weird need for justice.

What the women did was totally justified, why couldn't Rossi just leave them be?

Why track them down in another country OFF THE BOOKS just to snitch on them to the local authorities??

Overacting Much..?
My-Two-Cent27 June 2021
This entire show is going downhill fast and the eye rolling it causes is starting to give me a headache.. From the HORRIBLE acting and writing to the fact that they go out of their way to make every suspect super creepy and literally ugly.. Prentiss got out at the right time but I think the rest of the "team" are just collecting checks at this point..
