Ridley Scott avoided watching Alien³ (1992) after it was released, and strongly disliked it when he finally saw it decades later. Subsequently, he came up with the idea of making a "sequel-substitution", which then became this after many rewrites.
Some of the scenes were filmed in Sydney, Australia at Fox studios. Ridley Scott had given Michael Fassbender time off between takes in order for him to attend the X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) premiere that was being held in the same area.
Making a sequel to Prometheus was almost on indefinite hold after Neill Blomkamp approached 20th Century Fox with his own idea of continuing Ellen Ripley's story after Aliens. In fact, this help shape the approach Ridley Scott would take in his following films after Prometheus with Alien Covenant. Sigourney Weaver actress of Ripley and Michael Biehn who plays Hicks both have confirmed their involvement with Blomkamp. Ridley Scott and Neill Blomkamp have spoken as to not interfere with how they wanted to place their films in the Alien storyline. As of now unfortunately Blomkamp's Alien 5 film has been put on hold in place of both Alien Covenant and Ridley Scott's final Alien film in his new trilogy. Some say Blomkamp's Alien film may never get made because of this extended delay.
