Storyline

As Nikki discovers that Deanna was not Geraldine's daughter but an opportunist out to fleece Briggs, Schwartzman decides against buying the confectionery firm. Interviewd by DS Gold in Nikki's presence Geraldine explains that she was raped by Phillip Briggs as a teenager and her baby given away. John Briggs' legal adviser Annette, who found Deanna, expresses unease to Tranter about the deception and is later found murdered. Geraldine is arrested but the pathologists, aided by Jack's wheelchair-bound mentor Clarissa, uncover the truth though the killer never makes it to court. Geraldine is, however, reunited with her real daughter. Written by don @ minifie-1

Introducing Harry's replacement; Jack Hodgson
12 January 2013 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This two part story opens with two unrelated scenes that are interwoven. In one a businessman is trying to avoid having to sell his failing company and in the other a young man is taking part in a cage fight. The businessman drops dead in his hotel room and the fighter turns out to be Jack Hodgson, the forensic scientist examining the scene. He is convinced that it was murder although the police seem keen for it to be considered natural courses as that would cost them less. Nikki is inclined to believe it was natural courses but becomes less sure when less evidence is found than would be expected; the room contains virtually no fingerprints. Meanwhile the dead man's estranged daughter turns up and learns she has inherited the business and by an apparent coincidence her father had just found the girl who claims to be the daughter she put up for adoption. As the investigation continues more deaths occur and somebody within the investigating team is leaking information to the media.

This was a good opening to the sixteenth series although it was a shame Harry left without a proper send off. David Caves makes a nice addition to the cast in the role of Jack; it could prove interesting that his character is a forensic scientist rather than another pathologist. I'm sure that most viewers will at least suspect the guilty party but as everybody seems to have a motive it isn't easy to be sure who the killer is. The conclusion of the case was a little melodramatic but certainly satisfying; as was Jack's choice of location to confront the source of the leak. Having a leak certainly fitted in with real life police behaviour as a senior Metropolitan Police officer was found guilty of such offences in the week this was broadcast!
