Experimenter movie review: the subject is you

A creepy-cool vibe of constructed cinematic artificiality echoes the illusory nature of Stanley Milgram’s notorious experiment into human behavior. I’m “biast” (pro): love stories about science and scientists

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

You already know who Stanley Milgram is: he was the psychologist and researcher into human behavior who conducted the now famous — some would say infamous — experiment in which people were instructed to administer increasingly strong electrical shocks to a total stranger; most complied even over their own personal moral objections. The study, conducted at Yale University in the early 1960s and published in book form by Milgram in the early 70s, is considered essential to understanding our willingness to obey authority, how ordinary “good” people allow themselves to be complicit in terrible crimes such as the Holocaust; as the film notes, the study is

Watch a montage of Jason Statham punching people

Since his debut in Guy Ritchie’s 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, actor Jason Statham has emerged in the past few years as one of the leading action heroes currently working, with his popularity being proven by the fact that the Transporter series, which he headlined for the first three films, has gone on to a tv show adaptation and will be rebooted in theatres next weekend with The Transporter Refueled. That’s not the only action franchise Statham has headlined, however, as he has also been the leading man in the Crank films and been a part of the Expendables franchise and, more recently, the Fast and Furious franchise.

Action heroes often have to throw lots of punches onscreen, and Statham has been no exception in this regard. Now the youtube channel Burger Fiction has put together a compilation of the numerous punches Statham has thrown onscreen

Bill Fagerbakke interview: Spongebob, Starship Troopers, Statham

The voice of Patrick Star, Bill Fagerbakke, explains Spongebob to us...

The man who provides the voice to Patrick Star in Spongebob Squarepants - and thus, in the recent The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water feature - is Mr Bill Fagerbakke. As Sponge Out Of Water arrives on DVD, he spared us some time for a chat. But we started with something not so fishy...

Before we get onto Spongebob, it'd be remiss of me not to bring up the Starship Troopers animated TV show that you leant your voice to. That was the only proper companion they ever really did to the film.

Yeah. That was a cool ride. It was another time I worked with Clancy Brown too. The session director was Sue Blue, and it was so much fun. It was one of the very rare times in my voiceover career where I've portrayed a 'regular

Taking us back to where it all began, the film tells the true story of how these cultural rebels – armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent – stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A.

Jason Statham interview: Spy, Crank 3, Viva La Madness

The mighty Statham comes home to Den Of Geek, to chat Spy, Crank 3, Fast & Furious 8 and more...

This site's devotion to the mighty Statham has been ongoing for many years, yet for the man himself, 2015 is proving a vintage twelve months. Fast & Furious 7, his last film, is currently sitting as the fourth biggest of all time, and his next, Spy, is already picking up box office gold around the world.

Here, we spent some time with The Statham, where we talked comedy, Crank, and Crank 3...

Go back through your films, and there's no shortage of comedy in them. The Crank films in particular. Yet Spy sees you in your first outright comedy role. There's nothing ironic about it, either: a straight character, with loads of funny moments. How was it pitched to you, and why pick this one? You must have been offered comedy before.

Yeah, as you know,

Jason Statham: our last action hero (50 million Facebook fans can't be wrong)

The Rock is too big, Sly Stallone is too old and Steven Seagal looks too much like a sea lion. When you need a man who can chop off a gunman’s hand and use it to shoot someone else in the face, there’s only one person who fits the bill

In Homefront, Jason Statham is a tough, uncompromising DEA agent. In Crank, Jason Statham is a tough, uncompromising hit man. In Hummingbird, Jason Statham is a tough, uncompromising homeless man. In In the Name of the King, Jason Statham is a tough, uncompromising farmer.

Jason Statham is nothing if not consistent. Consistent and tough and uncompromising. But that consistency has won him legions of fans – almost 50 million on Facebook alone. You know what you’re getting with a Jason Statham film. He will beat people up. He will crash cars. He will do an unconvincing American accent. And

Ride or Die: A Complete History on the Evolution of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ Franchise

Ride or die.” Those words only appear a few times in the franchise – most famously out of Vin Diesel’s gravelly baritone in Fast & Furious 6 – but they have become the personal motto for how this franchise has continued, grown, succeeded and become greater with each film. Today, Furious 7, the latest in the series will be released, and it’s a mark of achievement not only that they’ve made it to seven films, but that it only feels exciting for a seventh film about criminals racing cars to be released. The Fast and the Furious franchise is unlike any franchise out there right now, as it has evolved from perfectly adequate popcorn films about criminals racing cars to superb and exhilarating blockbuster action films. No other franchise can say that they only began to hit their creative stride with the fifth film. To understand how we arrived at this point though,

Wild Card movie review: hardboiled rotten egg

Piles of noirish exposition get the better of Jason Statham in this unpleasantly retrograde crime drama. What happened in Vegas should have stayed there. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): Simon West must be stopped

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I understand why Jason Statham might want to expand his onscreen horizons. I don’t think he has it in him, but I get it. What I don’t get is: Why choose, for such a creative endeavor, this regressive throwback, which would have been unpleasantly backward-looking in the mid 1980s, when William Goldman published the novel it’s based on? (It was first adapted by Goldman himself for film in 1986, starring Burt Reynolds and titled Heat, and it wasn’t met with applause then, either.) Honestly, when I saw that Goldman was credited with the script here,
