Amazon Is Coming For HBO's Throne With a Lord of the Rings TV Series

  • BuzzSugar
Amazon has officially closed a deal to obtain rights for the Lord of the Rings franchise. According to Deadline, the company has paid $250 million to J.R.R. Tolkien's estate to create a new TV series set in Middle Earth, which will mark the first venture back into the fantasy world since 2014's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Amazon has reportedly committed to multiple seasons and a potential spinoff, and the stories will reportedly precede the events depicted in the Lord of the Rings book series. The decision to pay such a large price for the rights to the story falls directly in line with Amazon's attempt to compete with HBO's high-fantasy juggernaut, Game of Thrones, which is on the brink of its eighth and final season. Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon Studios, said in an official statement, "The Lord of the Rings is

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword review

Is it worth getting excited over Excalibur's latest big screen unsheathing? Here's our review of King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword...

Londinium. Unspecified olden times year. A young orphan is found in the Thames, and taken in by the staff of a nearby brothel. It surely isn’t a spoiler to say that he grows up to be Charlie Hunnam’s Arthur, who pulls a sword from a stone that no one else can, and irks the king of England (Jude Law) in doing so.

Much has been made of that fact that Guy Ritchie has directed and co-written this fresh reboot of the King Arthur legend, with the term “Medieval wide boy” being coined to describe Hunnam’s take on the central character.

Yet those early descriptions were a tad harsh. This isn’t an Arthur that swaggers his way around Camelot, wheeler dealing like Del Boy. Rather, he

Unlocked movie review: the spy who broke the female mold

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s stuff in this spy thriller that’s fresh, and lots that’s familiar, but Noomi Rapace using her brains and brawn to fight bad guys is a genuine thrill. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories women; love a good spy movie

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Is “unlock” genuine spook-speak, like the way it’s used in Unlocked: to get useful information out of a suspect during an interrogation? It makes sense, but who knows. Does the CIA actually have agents working as “community embeds,” as Noomi Rapace’s Alice Racine is as Unlocked opens? Cuz that would be authentically insidious: she seems to be a kindly public advocate in a poor London neighborhood, the sort of person you might go to if you were having trouble with your landlord or something,

Newswire: Peter Jackson to re-team with his old elf-bro, Hugo Weaving

  • The AV Club
Peter Jackson and his long-time elf accomplice Hugo Weaving are teaming back up, with Variety reporting that Weaving has joined the cast of Jackson’s Mortal Engines. Based on a series of novels by Philip Reeves, the film is being written by Jackson and his long-time writing partners, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, with Lord Of The Rings visuals vet Christian Rivers set to direct.

Outside his periodic Middle-earthen duties—last enacted in 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies—Weaving recently appeared in Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, playing the father to Andrew Garfield’s determined combat medic. Now he’ll be stepping into Reeves’ far-futuristic world, where society exists on the back of giant, mobile cities. There’s no word yet on what sort of part Weaving will play, but if we’re being honest, it’s pretty much a 50/50 call between “stern ...

Rogue One Scores Big $30M Thursday Night Box Office

Rogue One Scores Big $30M Thursday Night Box Office
Sad but true, Rogue One is no The Force Awakens, but compared to almost any other movie this year, it's a certified blockbuster. The first Star Wars spin-off has scored the second best ever Thursday Night preview at the box office with an estimated $30M and it's looking to continue its hot streak through the weekend. But did anyone expect less from the Star Wars franchise? Perhaps some fans expected more?

But that seems impossible. Disney and Lucasfilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is down 47% from what Star Wars: The Force Awakens pulled in last year around this time when it opened for Thursday Night previews to the tune of $57M. Disney hasn't released the official box office numbers for Rogue One's Thursday bow yet, though. That is expected a little later in the morning.

Rogue One is currently Fresh on the Rotten Tomatoes TomatoMeter, with a
