Needless, but pleasant sequel
27 November 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

When a series starts going straight to video or TV, it's like the kiss of death. By then the studio is simply trying to milk a franchise dry. Just look at all the unnecessary sequels to 'Air Bud' and 'The Land Before Time.' The first two 'Home Alone' films were successful, but then kids grow up and you move on. 3 introduced us to a new family and was good in it's own right. 4 was a made for TV sequel to 1 & 2, but eagle eyed viewers didn't buy that it was the McCallisters. Ten years on we have this film, which is better than it should be.

Pros: Well acted all around. Nice job by director Peter Hewitt. Fast paced. Some neat ideas. A few cool homages to the first film. Some fresh territory for the series. Good score.

Cons: We've seen this all before. Predictable at times. Got to suspend disbelief quite a bit. Villains should have been a bigger threat.

Final thoughts: The world didn't need another 'Home Alone' film. With that out of the way, this installment isn't half bad. It makes up for the weak fourth film, which made the mistake of trying recapture the original's glory. Won't set the world on fire, but a reasonable time killer.

My rating: 3/5
