It is speculated that instead of making the vikings in the series one nationality, the producers chose to make them a collected "scandinavian" people. Thus, the locations representing Kattegat strongly resembles Norwegian landscapes, the accent spoken is clearly Swedish, and the plots are based on Icelandic sagas about Danish heroes, kings and battles. The idea is also supported by the name of the settlement "Kattegat" - in real life, this is not an area, but the sea connecting Denmark, Sweden and Norway. See more
The Viking Age government is shown to be theocratic. In reality, the government of the Viking Era was an elective monarchy. The Norse had the legal and religious right to dispose of their kings which were elected in votes and had the legal right to oppose a royal policy at a thing. See more
