Rollo was based on a real Viking called Hrolf (latinized as Rollo) who went on to conquer parts of France. Those parts are now known as Normandy: "Land of the Norsemen". Hrolf was the ancestor of William the Conqueror. Actually being William's Great-Great-Great Grandfather. See more
Most historian hold it very likely that the Norse had contact with the Anglo-Saxons in the later part of the 8th century and the existence of England was widely known to them, unlike how they are portrayed in this show. In fact contact and trade with Anglo-Saxons is a likely explanation to how vikings where able to locate monasteries such as Lindisfarne. See more
