Extended Family is a personal story about the links between adoptive and birth families of children adopted from Guatemala. It explores whether adoptive families should search for their young children's birth families-and what happens when they do. An adoptive mother from the US goes to Guatemala to meet her son's birth family. When she arrives, she discovers that her son's brothers and sister may not know about the adoption. During her travels with a "searcher" and a birth mother, she finds out more about the pressures and dangers that birth mothers face, and why most adoptions are kept secret.
