- NYC ad exec Holly Maddux can't help but notice the window display she passes by on her way to work every day, the one with the perfect, hunky mannequin. Holly hits it off with her new beau, and soon things are going along... well, perfectly. - In New York City, Holly Maddux works in advertising at Quin+Gunn. She has her own office and a bumbling but sweet secretary Meg. Two weeks before Christmas, Holly is disappointed it is not snowing, and Meg knows she was at the office when she ordered a pizza at 2 in the morning on a Sunday. But Holly is nearly always smiling. Her friend and co-worker Deena has Marcos and wants Holly to have a man too.
Livingston, Holly's boss, calls Holly and photographer Milo into the conference room and assigns them a campaign for Chelsea Diamonds. Even though it is close to Christmas, if they work hard they can make it happen.
Holly and Milo disagree on the type of campaign. Holly believes in making people happy with the ideal Christmas, and the best-looking, most successful people in the ads. Milo thinks what Holly wants makes people feel inadequate and that "real" people should be used.
Darryl, the tech guy, has a crush on Meg.
Holly puts on a sexy dress Deena provided and goes to a noisy dance club where she meets Deena and Marcos. Marcos seems interested in other pretty women but Deena doesn't have a problem with that because he'll always come back to her. Holly doesn't meet anyone, though Milo is there and takes a picture of Holly holding hands with him.
The next day Milo calls Holly about work on her cell phone. Holly lives close enough to walk to work and as usual, she is walking when she falls and hits her head. When Holly wakes up, she sees the perfect man--tall, good-looking and charming Bo. Bo helps her up and says he'd like to take her to dinner.
Holly comes in to work all excited about this man.
Holly shows up at the restaurant where Bo wanted them to eat. Bo is making conversation with other people there. He took the liberty of ordering what he thought Holly would like. Bo tells Holly he used to work in advertising and shows the various poses from campaigns where he was a model. Why doesn't Bo have a girlfriend? Well, he did. Asked about her parents, Holly says they'll be spending Christmas in the Caribbean and she can't possibly get away to be with them.
At work Holly and Deena act like teenagers, and the sound they make is described as being like dolphins.
On another visit to that dance club, Holly sees Marcos with another woman and believes she should tell Deena.
Bo invites Holly to his nice apartment, which happens to be across from the department store where mannequins were being prepared during the opening credits. The sign in the window says "Give her a perfect Christmas". The female mannequin appears to be watching the people disapprovingly. Bo says hello to a neighbor who he helped when the neighbor needed him.
Asked what he does for a living, Bo says he used to work in retail but now travels the world and does volunteer work. And he has prepared the perfect meal. However, Holly drops a crystal glass, spilling her drink. Bo doesn't get angry but he is clearly upset that the glass was broken and his tablecloth was stained.
Milo has tried to contact Holly about work but did not get a response.
Bo wants to come to Holly's apartment, with a surprise. And when he shows up, the surprise is that he brought his parents Mike and Carol, They are as perfect and perky as their son. Carol brought what was needed to prepare the meal. While they are eating, Mike and Carol say that they used to appear in ads back in the day, and they show how they posed. While Holly is out of the room, Bo tells his parents about the perfect life he and Holly will have. Holly is bothered by this, because her idea of a perfect life is different from his. For example, she doesn't want three kids.
Milo and Holly work together and often are at the office late. At one point Milo talks about his previous journalism career which he finally decided he hated. He liked the idea of small towns because they were the life he wished he had grown up with.
The time has come for the photo shoot. Milo gave in and let Holly choose a perfect setting and perfect people. When they arrive at the set, the man in charge says the shoot was canceled. He has their deposit, so what does it matter to him? Holly asks who canceled, and the name of the person who did it is Bo.
Bo says they should come to his apartment because it is perfect for the photo shoot. Other campaigns have been done there. Actually, he only wants Holly and Meg, because he has a well-known photographer named Dex.
Dex starts taking pictures of perfect-looking models who don't seem happy, He tells them how happy they should be, but something just doesn't seem right. Nevertheless, Dex does the best he can. Then he asks Holly, who is pretty enough, to appear in photos. Bo volunteers to be the man. Still, things don't seem quite right. And if that's not enough, Bo's beautiful ex Brandi (who actually looks dowdy) shows up and starts wrecking the place. That's it. the shoot is over.
Back at the office, Milo is disappointed not only that he didn't get to shoot the campaign but that there is so little worth using. Nevertheless, he will try to salvage the campaign. He also gives Holly an early Christmas present, a Viewmaster with her various campaigns.
Milo is able salvage some of the photos from the shoot and comes up with something brilliant.
There is an office Christmas party, but not at the office. Meg looks pretty and she is providing music, which is more like what was at the dance club than anything intended for the holidays. Marcos shows up with Brandi, looking gorgeous. Deena tells Marcos what she thinks of him, and Marcos has trouble understanding this. Bo is also there and he wants to propose, and he announces big plans for the New Year's holiday that include a trip to Vermont. Holly has finally had enough and she explains that she is not the girl Bo wants. Bo says he doesn't care because he can fix her. Holly says she doesn't want to be fixed.
Meg and Darryl finally reveal how they feel about each other, and somehow the music keeps playing while they go off together.
Brandi sees Livingston and tells him everything that happened at the photo shoot. Deena knows the truth and tells Livingston what really happened, and that it wasn't Holly's fault. Deena also has security escort Deena and Marcos out because they crashed the party. Deena meets Kyle, who is from Australia and works several floors above her.
Milo is at the party hoping Holly will realize she is the right one for him, but when it becomes clear she does not realize this, he goes out to catch a cab. Holly realizes her mistake just in time and runs out after him, but she falls and hits her head.
Holly wakes up in the hospital. Milo is with her. The doctor calls him 'Mr. Maddux". Milo explains he told people he was her husband so he could stay with her. She has been in the hospital several days. When Holly starts asking questions, she realizes none of what has happened really happened.
Although the doctor recommends Holly stay another day in the hospital, Holly is determined to finish the campaign so she demands her laptop and anything else she needs to do her work.
One of the visitors is Kyle, who is not from Australia but is perfect for Deena and really does work upstairs.
Holly is shocked to see photos of the perfect people she had wanted, when she now realizes the campaign should feature ordinary people. After a great deal of effort, there is nothing worth using except the photo of the hands of Holly and Milo from the dance club. The movie ends with that photo, and a diamond ring added to Holly's hand, on the side of a bus with the Chelsea Diamonds logo and slogan. The department store's mannequin is no longer watching everything.
