Australian VFX supervisor Seth Larney (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Malaysia’s Nasir Jani are co-directing Malaysian action thriller Tombiruo, based on the best-selling novel by Ramlee Awang Murshid.

Produced by Malaysia’s Astro Shaw, Ideate Media, Karangkraf and Layar Sunan, the film has also tapped Us-based 42 Entertainment to work on character design. 42 Entertainment has created games and immersive experiences for Us studio movies including Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Dark Knight and Tron Legacy.

According to Astro Shaw vice president, business development, Najwa Abu Bakar, the movie is being positioned for audiences beyond Malaysia, with the mix of Us, Australian and Southeast Asian talent.

This year’s New York Comic Con will roll out the red carpet for attendees. Producer ReedPOP has partnered with CAA Premium Experience — a division of Creative Artists Agency — to launch the convention’s first ever red carpet celebration as its opening event.

The invitation-only “Heroes After Dark” event will be held late night on Wednesday, October 5, and host A-list talent from the big and small screen, in addition to industry professionals and influencers. Netflix has announced today that the upcoming BBC America series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is set to hit the streaming service in all territories outside the Us this December, after premiering in the States in October.

Netflix to Co-Produce BBC America Comedy ‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’

Netflix will co-produce BBC America’s new comedic thriller “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” along with AMC Studios, Ideate Media and Idw Entertainment, the streaming service announced Thursday. Netflix will also stream the series internationally in all Netflix territories outside the U.S.

The show will premiere on BBC America on October 22 and all eight episodes will launch on Netflix outside the U.S. in December.

Production Company Circle of Confusion Launches China-U.S. Talent Incubator

Circle of Confusion partner Lawrence Mattis and producer-director Hans Canosa have formed a talent incubator for bilingual and bicultural writers for the China and U.S. markets, Variety has learned exclusively.

Production-management company Circle of Confusion produces “The Walking Dead,” “Fear the Walking Dead,” “The Talking Dead,” “Powers,” “Outcast,” and “Dirk Gently.” Its recent films include “Spare Parts,” “American Ultra,” and “Mr. Right,” starring Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick.

Their year-long Resonance fellowship program will invite up to 10 emerging storytellers — who are bilingual in English and Mandarin — annually to participate in the Los Angeles salaried program with benefits. “There can never be too many programs dedicated to discovering and developing diverse writing talent,” said Canosa.

The irrepressibly randy French skunk Pepé Le Pew is a shade over 60 years old now, but the Looney Tunes cartoon character could soon be getting his own movie at Warner Bros. 

Screenwriter Max Landis brought the subject up during the panel for his forthcoming TV adaptation of Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently at Comic-Con over the weekend, where he revealed that he'd pitched his idea for a Pepé Le Pew movie to bosses at Warner.
