AFM: Mid-Market Generating Mix of Optimism and Uncertainty
As the 38th American Film Market reaches the half-way point, a mixed picture has emerged that reflects the profound changes in the movie industry.

Buyers offer the usual refrain about the seeming lack of big buzz titles as the industry continues to reel from fresh revelations in Hollywood’s sexual assault scandal — a topic that dominated conversations at Afm headquarters at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica. Additionally, domestic box office for 2017 has been lagging by an alarming 5%.

But notable deals have closed, such as Paramount’s announcement Friday that it was buying the comedy “The Book Club,” starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen; Emmy winner Uzo Aduba joining the drama “The Virginian”; and Lionsgate buying five Studiocanal titles include Liam Neeson’s “Hard Powder” and the Colin Firth-Rachel Weisz drama “The Mercy.”

Michael Ryan, partner at London-based Gfm Films and chairman of Afm organizer Independent Film and Television Alliance, admits

Den of Thieves Trailer Has Gerard Butler Chasing Down 50 Cent
Stx Entertainment has released the first trailer and poster for Den of Thieves, a new crime thriller starring Gerard Butler as a legendary Los Angeles cop trying to take down a brazen crew of bank robbers. Along with this new trailer, Stx has also debuted quite the unique poster, with this team of cops lead by Gerard Butler's Nick Flanagan on one side, and the bank robbers lead by 50 Cent's character on the bottom, which can be reversed so the robbers side is on top and the cops are on the bottom. We'll have to wait until January to find out who truly comes out on top in this epic thriller.

A Los Angeles crime saga in the vein of Heat, Den of Thieves follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the La County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery

InnoVate Productions and 4th & 1 Films, in association with Benetone Films, have attached Jamie Marshall (The Foreigner, Out of the Furnace) to direct their latest feature film Gunmetal Rose, a dark comedy of violence and redemption.

“This film is going to be a lot of fun,” said Marshall. “I’m excited to direct, and work, with a great group of producers, and pushing the envelope with Gunmetal Rose.”

Written by Daniel Hart Donoghue, and set in the ruins of a remote, abandoned church, Gunmetal Rose follows a hitman with post-traumatic stress disorder, and a thief in the throes of existential crisis, as they attempt to ascertain the identity of

How Geostorm Became One of 2017's Biggest Bombs

How Geostorm Became One of 2017's Biggest Bombs
Geostorm is a certifiable flop in every sense of the word. The long-in-development disaster movie finally arrived in theaters over the weekend. And it arrived with a thud. The movie made just $13.3 million domestically on its opening weekend, which doesn't even cover the very expensive reshoots, estimated to be $15 million, that the movie needed. At this point, Geostorm is almost certainly going to lose money. The question is, how much? It turns out, $100 million or more, making this one of the costliest missteps of the year.

According to industry analysts, Geostorm needs to make around $360 million worldwide to break even. Geostorm, which carries a massive $120 million production budget, not to mention a very big marketing budget, has made just $65.4 million worldwide so far. The movie still needs to open in China, but even if the movie performs very well in that market, most of that money won't make its way back to the studio.

Exclusive: Gerard Butler on the plot for Angel Has Fallen

Duncan Bowles Oct 23, 2017

Olympus Has Fallen 3 has a director - and Gerard Butler has been telling us what to expect from the film...

As part of our interview with Mr Gerard Butler, who’s in town to promote the gloriously enjoyable disaster/action/sci-fi/drama that is Geostorm, we saved a few minutes at the end to talk about the future of Mike Banning and the status of Angel Has Fallen. Like many of Butler’s films, both Olympus and London Has Fallen proved to be quite divisive in terms of the violence and political content. But they sure were box office hits.

Gerard Butler interview: Geostorm, Angel Has Fallen and more

Duncan Bowles Oct 23, 2017

Gerard Butler chats to us about Geostorm, his bike accident, and Olympus Has Fallen 3...

Geostorm is a film that is so bombastic, it feels like a crime to write its name in lowercase letters – Geostorm fits much better and conveys the gloriously over the top shenanigans that Gerard Butler finds himself at the centre of, as the planet Earth has set about imploding after no one paid any attention to climate change. Thankfully Butler’s character, Jake Lawson, has created a net of satellites in space that can prevent future weather based disasters, until it appears that someone might have set about turning ‘Dutch Boy’ (the control system) into a weapon…

Geostorm is a throwback to the golden era of nineties disaster movies in the best way; if you’ve ever loved the likes of Armageddon, Dante’s Peak or Twister (to name a few) then deciding

Gerard Butler says Angel Has Fallen is the series’ Logan

Back in October it was announced that Gerard Butler is set to return as Secret Service agent Mike Banning for Angel Has Fallen, a sequel to the hit action films Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, and in an interview with Cinema Blend to promote his new film Geostorm, Butler has revealed that the third movie is set to deliver a more character-focussed story, similar to that of this year’s Logan.

“You know, it’s fun to watch a city falling or the White House falling, and it’s fun to watch it again, and you go ‘what?’ The joke would be, ‘What’s next? Tokyo?’ Ok. So let’s take it in another direction and go inner world, and it just feels a little more surprising. It was almost like Logan was to Wolverine, is our Angel Has Fallen was to the first two.”

Gerard Butler was rushed to hospital today following a motorbike accident. According to reports, he was riding his Harley Davidson through Los Angeles when a car cut him off, causing him to crash. He is understood to have escaped serious injury, suffering only a few cuts and bruises.

A passer-by quickly alerted the emergency services after the accident took place. The Paisley-born actor, who has previously joked about his susceptibility to accidents, is now recovering and is expected to continue work on promoting his latest film, Geostorm, by the end of the week.

Butler was hospitalised in 2011 after he nearly drowned while filming surf drama Chasing Mavericks, and again the following year when he broke two bones in his neck while filming Olympus Has Fallen.

Geostorm provides Butler with another action role as he goes up against a natural disaster unleashed when climate control satellites stop working as planned.

Why are babies allowed into 18-certificate parent and baby screenings?

Simon Brew Sep 21, 2017

Parent and baby screenings of mother!? Aren't babies held to the same BBFC certificates as the rest of us? Well, sort of...

The first film that my youngest child watched in a cinema was Olympus Has Fallen. He knew next to nothing about it, given that he was less than a year old and fast asleep. But I’ll always be conscious of the fact that the first time he went to the movies, he snuck in underage. Because technically, he wasn’t supposed to be there.

It sounds a small thing, but Olympus Has Fallen was given a 15 certificate in the UK, yet clearly, my then tiny child was 14 years and counting shy of that. The cinema in question could have got into serious trouble for admitting someone underage, that it technically did. It is actually an offence, with a punishment.

In fact, go back to

The latest China-Hollywood dealmaking casualty has arrived: Avi Lerner's $100 million plan to sell majority control of Millennium Films to Beijing's Recon Group is officially dead.

The indie maverick unveiled the agreement in February, saying he would offload 51 percent of the studio, known for The Expendables and Olympus Has Fallen franchises, to Recon subsidiary Wenyuan Cable Co.
