The End of the Ame Orphans
tomasmmc-771987 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here concludes the story of the Ame Orphans, who were temporarily raised by Jiraiya, and later founded Akatsuki. By this point, Konan was the only one alive, but she was ruling Amegakure as Nagato's succesor. But on last episode, Tobi returned to confront her, looking for Nagato's Rinnegan, so a battle started. Konan is fighting to protect Yahiko and Nagato's dream, which lives in Naruto. She wants to be the pillar for the child of the prophecy, like Yahiko thought of Nagato. Now, she has opened a chasm around the lake boarding Amegakure, and intends to bury Tobi above millions of explosive tags. Konan starts a first wave of detonations when Tobi tries to make himself intangible. She says she has studied his abilities during their time in Akatsuki, and is aware that his space time ninjutsu requires for him to materialize in the moment he disappears, and that it lasts five minutes. But Tobi manages to stop the jutsu before the explosives drag him, and recovers. Then Konan sets a second wave of detonations, this time for all the explosive tags she prepared, which is going to last ten minutes, while Tobi removes his broken mask to reveal his left eye. She is certain that Tobi will be killed, and thinks that he lied, Nagato and Yahiko never were his pawns, they acted by their own will, they founded Akatsuki. Each decision they made (Yahiko choosing to die to save them, Nagato trusting Naruto, and others) was personal. She believes it's over, but suddenly Tobi reappears from behind, and stabs her with a steel. She is shocked as she prepared this plan cautiously, and imagined the scenario several times, so he reveals that he used Izanagi by sacrificing his left eye, which was a Sharingan. She asks who he is, and Tobi still calls himself Madara, the renewed Rikudo Sennin. He explains that the first Rikudo Sennin was able to create Izanagi in the same way he created the Bijuus, by manipulating the imagination and reality. Only the persons with the two heirs, Uchiha and Senju can perform it well. Danzo failed and performed an imperfect Izanagi because he only had the Senju cells. But Tobi is a true Uchiha with the Senju cells. Then, Konan manages to get away, and as she bleeds, the rain stops. The sun comes out, a rainbow forms on the sky of Amegakure. Obito is surprised because usually the rain never stops in that village, and Konan takes it as a sign of Yahiko and Nagato, saying that Naruto is the bridge to peace. She regains hope, and despite her wound, manages to attack with several origami shurikens and other paper sharp weapons. But as she before called him the darkness, Obito blocks them with the steel until it breaks, and then takes the chance to choke her. He will wither her, and places her on a genjutsu to get the location of Nagato's body. He leaves, as she passes away from her wounds, lying on the water. Obito reaches the Shrine where the two other Ame orphans are resting, and recognizes Nagato as the third Rikudo Sennin. He tells that his red hair was proof of his Uzumaki blood, and that it surely turned white given his last jutsu of resurrection. Then, Obito leaves and takes Nagato's body with him in order to get the Rinnegan. At the end, back at the hideout, he changes his mask to a new one, white and with three Sharingan symbols on it. He changes his robes, and starts wearing a cape with the Uchiha emblem on the back. Then he tells Kabuto and Zetsu that they are going to capture the Kyuubi, after the scroll from Kisame arrived to give his location. This part of the episode was very good given the battle, and the powerful dark villain Tobi proved to be. And also symbolizes the end of Akatsuki. Obito knew that Konan was right: The Akatsuki robes have the red cloud that symbolizes the rain and blood from Amegakure. So he chose to wear new clothes with the Uchiha emblem, and a new (horrible) mask, considering Konan broke the old one. Now the war won't be against Akatsuki, will be against the Uchihas. On the other hand, this part was saddening given Konan's fate. I think she deserved to live and rule Amegakure, following Yahiko and Nagato's dream, and in the future, establish an alliance with Naruto as Hokage. That way, a true peace and prosperity could have flourished in the Hidden Rain village, which would last a long time. But Konan's death basically ruins that possibility. The village will be at the mercy of anyone, like always. It's like a forgotten place once again. That's not the right message, considering this anime has a pretty exaggerated unrealistic happy ending. Kishimoto only wrote that for the five big villages. Also, the three orphans die without a heir, or someone to remember them. That's what it looked like. It's sad, unfair. Surely they committed many sins, but of the three, Konan was the kindest, like Jiraiya said. Yahiko's dream dies with her, because Naruto can't rule two villages. Amegakure didn't deserve this ending.

The second part of the episode is emotional as shows a series of flashbacks including more scenes of Jiraiya's parenting. In their hideout, after disguising himself as a big frog, causing laughter among the orphans (memory showed in last episode), now he convinces them to use their own frog disguises, with the intention to train a Water on a Frog's face, so they can learn to remain quiet, by adjusting to the disguise. Jiraiya also develops a "hop-in" card system which the Ame Orphans would use whenever they left their hideout, and as a precaution, he created a secret underground passage. He tells that the country goes through inestability and danger, so it's necessary for their safety. When they are inside the hideout, each one of their cards must be red. When they are outside, they must switch the card to white, to prevent any capture or infiltration, as Konan realizes. Jiraiya jokingly lectures Yahiko for not getting the idea. When they go outside to train, despite the rain, Jiraiya warns Yahiko about the card, as he forgot to switch it. Konan laughs while she switches her card, same as Nagato. When their sensei sees Yahiko on his frog suit above the rain, he realizes how funny they actually look, to his dismay. Time passes, and the three make progress in their training. The day Jiraiya left, his card was switched to white. Then, Konan remembers their first times while founding Akatsuki: once Yahiko was injured and very bandaged, both were in the hideout as she took care of him, and they shared their first kiss. Later, they fought in the village in order to get the peace they were looking for, and finally got recognized by Hanzo. As their organization got bigger, they decided to move out from their hideout, and so, their cards were switched to white. But that day, they were discovered by enemies, and were forced to use the secret passage. They promised to go back one day and invite Jiraiya. The episode ends with a sheet of paper turned red with Konan's blood, being carried by the wind to the Ame orphans old hideout. It's focused on how despite the branches, bushes and disorder around, the three cards from Jiraiya, Yahiko and Nagato were red. At last, Konan's card is turned red with the sheet of paper, implying that the four are reunited again in the afterlife. This part was excellent and touching as well. Once again, showed Jiraiya's greatness in the best possible way. The nickname Ero sennin doesn't honor his memory, and he told Naruto several times not to call him like that. He was a grandfather, a parental figure, the unlikely happy hero of the story. The idea of disguising himself as a frog was something only he could make, and he did it to bring happiness, laughter, joyful moments to three war orphans. By creating the secret tunnel and using the card system, he protected them for years. Jiraiya was a fantastic man. There won't be someone like him. He raised those three from a young age, that's why it worked. I already know why Nagato transformed in Pain, he was unstable of mind, and Yahiko's death made him crazy. But while he was with Jiraiya, the three were happy and innocent. Konan's memories are a glimpse of the joy a single person can bring to children without family. It makes me wonder why it wasn't showed more time, more flashbacks between Jiraiya and Naruto. Then, I want to make a remark about Konan and Yahiko. They surely made a nice couple. At the end it feels like the Ame orphans deserved a different ending. The last scene was brilliant, but it's sad that the three had to die, while most of the Konoha characters had a "happy" ending.
