In the present Alex, discovering that she drowned, searches for her body with Tom's help so that she may pass over. Hal is approached by the sinister Dominic Rook who tries to tempt him with a supply of blood if he will engineer a vampire take-over but Hal refuses, shortly before being responsible for office worker Ian "Crumb" Cran being run over. The return of the vampire, the werewolf and the ghost
4 February 2013 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Series five opens with Hal, the vampire, tied to a chair being fed by Tom, the werewolf who doesn't think he is safe after the events of the last season. Hal thinks it is torture… not because of the actual treatment but because he can see just how messy the house has become! Eventually he frees Hal and they go for job interview at a smart hotel. On the way back Hal flashes his fangs at somebody who bumps into him; this person flees into the path of a passing car; unwilling to watch another person die Hal turns him into a vampire. He leaves him chained in the basement so he can't act on his blood lust but Alex, the ghost, lets him out and he pays an office where he was never appreciated by his boss. In a series of flashbacks we see Hal and a lady werewolf trying to establish a peace; he believes the war between the vampires and the werewolves was started by someone, or something truly evil… something that is still around today!

This was the first episode with none of the original characters but while they are missed the new cast who arrived last series are doing a decent job. They don't quite have the chemistry the originals had but that might just be a matter of time. I'm particularly impressed by Damien Malony's portrayal of Hal; a vampire with obsessive compulsive disorder. A new addition in this episode is Phil Davis; so far his role has been small but he could shape up to be the best villain of the series so far; there is certainly something menacing about his character. The series continues to balance a good story, some fairly gruesome moments and just the right amount of laughs; I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the series.
