Storyline

Texas beauty Susan Wright appeared to have a fairytale life with an adoring husband, Jeff, two beautiful kids, and close family and friends. But in 2003, six years into their marriage, the fairy tale crumbles when Jeff is found dead and buried in the backyard of their suburban home. The close-knit community is shocked as police accuse Susan of pre-meditated murder -- luring her husband into the bedroom, tying him up and violently stabbing him almost 200 times before haphazardly cleaning up the crime scene. As Jeff's family reels from the devastating news, Susan begins to mount her aggressive defense; that she needed to kill Jeff out of self-preservation for herself and her children after years of physical and mental abuse. But prosecutor Kelly Siegler is skeptical of her defense and forcefully argues she is a cunning, doe-eyed sociopath, who has used her good looks to try to get away with anything in life -- even murder. Goofs

This obviously wasn't filmed in either Galveston or Houston. Galveston does not have palm trees planted all around the beaches, nor do the beaches there have public volleyball nets. In addition, the trees in "Houston" are not native to the area, and the filming location was obviously much cooler than the Houston area. At one point, a reporter refers to the murder taking place in "Cypress Fair." There is no such place. There is an area named Cypress-Fairbanks outside of Houston, but no one ever refers to it at "Cypress Fair." It is either called "Cy-Fair" or by its full name. See more »

There were plenty of signs that Jeff Wright was bad news, but Susan was looking for Mr. Right and that's where she went wrong.

As this movie portrays it, Jeff immediately tried to use her for sex, reached for a joint right after finally consummating their relationship, and hemmed and hawed about what to do when Susan accidentally got pregnant.

Everyone put on a happy face at the wedding but things quickly went south from there.

Sara Paxton is excellent here -- a stereotypically sweet blonde who naively commits to a conventional tough guy who fundamentally dislikes and disrespects women.

It's an interesting true-crime story that's a bit off the beaten path. I agree with her prison therapist that Susan was the "poster child" of abused wives. However, the way she chose to kill her husband was sadistic and had nothing to do with self-defense.

The film's credits tell us Wright will be eligible for parole next year. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out.

I liked the creepy note on which the film ends!
