Did You Know?

The rifle used is actually based on the M41A Pulse Rifle from the film Aliens. See more »

In this and in Part I, Malory imbibes considerable amounts of clearly-labeled isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) when she can't find any liquor on the shuttle or the space station. This is a glaring and potentially actionable error by the series' writers. Though not as toxic as methanol (wood alcohol), as little as a half-ounce by weight of isopropyl alcohol can be fatal to a full-grown adult if not treated in time. See more »

Season 3: Consistently funny as it mixes the smart with the silly with the outrageous
4 November 2015 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This season opens with a very good three-episode arc, and ends with a two-episode story set on the International Space Station; these bookends are very strong, and in between the episodes are also mostly very good, albeit not as good as the start and end. This season doesn't appear to be struggling for plots, but I did get the feeling that there was a bit more work to make them happen. So in this season there seems to be a few more which use supporting characters as plot devices (such as Ray's return home) than would have been the case in the previous seasons. This is not a complaint though, since it adds to the show to have all the players involved, and for there to be consistent side-threads for the support, as well as involving them in the main plots. The promotion of Cyril to agent doesn't always work as such, but it is has lots of good material around it so it doesn't matter too much.

This material continues to be very funny, and show all the strengths of the show – namely variety. At first glance the show is crude and silly, and for sure it is both – which is a good thing. On top of this though the writing and dialogue is really sharp and funny – I particularly like the lines which run through episodes being used by all characters, the funniest being the use of idioms in Heart of Archness. It is easy to forget that this aspect is by far the strongest part of the show, even if the most crude moments are the ones that stick in the mind. This sharpness of writing continues with the voice cast, who all have great delivery and timing. The voice cast is added to with a lot of guest voices in this season, from Burt Reynolds through to Bryan Cranston and many others (some episodes having several well known voices in there). I am watching this show many years after it screened, so I do not know if this was a reflection of the pulling power of the show, or an attempt to boost ratings, however either way the key thing is that everyone works within the show, even if some of the very distinctive voices do occasionally distract as you try to figure out where you know them from.

So, another consistently funny season in a show I am increasingly glad I sought out.
